Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Discharged from Marine Service
« on: Thursday 21 April 22 12:56 BST (UK)  »
I'm having trouble reading the reason for my ancestor being discharged. I think the last word is Malta maybe and i'm not sure on the first word. Also does anyone know why he would have St. Andrew's cross on the back of his left hand?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Place name on marriage certificate
« on: Sunday 13 March 22 22:14 GMT (UK)  »
I was hoping someone could help me decipher this place name. I think it says Dunoonie... but i can't find anywhere of that name. Perhaps i'm misreading it. James Brown and Ann Anderson were living in Astruther Easter in Fife in the 1841 and 1851 census, and were apparently born there.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Finding a unknown father.
« on: Sunday 23 January 22 23:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I’ve recently done an Ancestry DNA test, my first question is, is it normal for it to be stuck on stage one. I posted in 2 weeks ago and still has not been received by ancestry labs.

My main question is would I be able to find the father of my gt-gt grandmother? She was born illegitimate and there is no clue who her father may be, but theoretically I should carry some of her DNA and in turn her father’s DNA - I am aware that there is a chance I have inherited little or none of her DNA.

If descendants of her father did a DNA test I should match up with them, yes? But how easy would it be for me to find out who they are? My guess is not very easy…

She also had 4 other siblings, all illegitimate, and a father only known for one.

Thanks,
Callum

Midlothian / Annie Cameron - Census
« on: Monday 13 December 21 17:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help me find Annie Cameron in the 1911 census, she was born in 1892, Edinburgh and lived there all her life as far as I'm aware.
I know she was at 3 Warriston Crescent, Edinburgh in the 1901 census, living with her father, John Cameron and mother, Bessie Barrett Cameron (neé Hyne). Along with her 7 siblings, Nellie, Bessie, Gertrude, Evelyn, Ian and Robina.

In the 1911 census i can find Bessie Barrett Cameron at 7 Union Street, Edinburgh. Along with Bessie, Gertrude, Evelyn, Ian and Robina.
Nellie, had since moved out and married.

The absence of John Cameron in this census may have been due to him being a Mariner, but in 1901 he was a Fruitier and I am told he had given up a life at sea to pursue a Fruitier career. So, there is a good possibility that he is with Annie.

Bessie Barrett Cameron (neé Hyne) was born in Devon, England, so Annie may have gone to visit family down there, but I've had no luck searching censuses there so far.

Thanks,
Callum

Fife / William Scott - Sailor
« on: Wednesday 08 December 21 16:45 GMT (UK)  »
I have a William Scott that was a Sailor from Fife, I was hoping that someone could help me translate his marriage certificate that states what service he was in.

From what i can read it says,
William Scott in this Parish and Lilly Scott in the
Parish of Pittemweem were contracted November 1st and
after due proclamation married November 4th 1794 being three
times in one Sabbath also a Sailor in the ??? Service.

I know they had one son, William Scott born 1797, also a Sailor but he died before any censuses so don't know much about him, presumably at sea as i can't find a death record for him, or perhaps it had been lost/not made.

William and Lilly were married in St Monace and Pittemweem, the above is the St Monace transcription.

Thanks,
Callum

Northamptonshire / Susannah Barrett
« on: Wednesday 17 November 21 23:57 GMT (UK)  »
I’m hoping someone could help me find who Susannah Barrett’s parents were. Most of my family research is Scottish and I’m stumped here where I feel I should be able to locate further back.

I know she was born in Grafton, Northamptonshire around 1800.

She married Samuel Shrives in 1822 also in Grafton, Northamptonshire.

She died in Devon in 1864.

From what I can see she had 9 children in total.
John (1823 - 1899)
Ann (1823 - 1898)
Gabriel (1826 -
Charlotte (1829 -
Priscilla (1831 - 1901)
Hannah (1834 - 1912)
Anna Maria (1837 -
Ellen (1839 - 1914)
Henry (1845 - 1914)

They must’ve moved to Devon between 1837 and 1839 as Anna Maria was born in Northamptonshire and Ellen, Devon.

Lanarkshire / Ann Orr Born in England?
« on: Friday 29 October 21 16:45 BST (UK)  »
I'm not terribly sure where to put this, so sorry if it's in the wrong place.

I have a relative, Ann Orr who on censuses claims to be born in England around 1810. She died in 1900 and states her parents to be William Orr and Ann Carfrae.

She had two siblings born in Kirknewton in 1800 and 1803, (Elizabeth and John), so I assume her parents had moved down to England before then, before moving back up to Kirknewton as she married there in 1835, to James Rennie.

Her father was a Soldier, so maybe that's why they moved down south. Anyway, I can't seem to find her birth anywhere so I was hoping someone could help me with that as I'd like to know in what area of England she was born.

Library and FHS Lookups / James Gould/Guild
« on: Wednesday 27 October 21 08:12 BST (UK)  »
Sorry, don't know if this is the correct place to post this!

I have a relative named James Gould. Died in Edinburgh in 1854 and was born roughly in 1779. He stated on both census' that he was from Edinburgh, however I can't find any birth record for him (not unusual for back then, of course). Looking up other people's births around then that have the same surname I think I may have found who his parent's were, but I wanted to post on here to get someone else's opinion. Basically, tell me if i'm clutching to straws here please!

James married Isabella Foot in 1802 in Edinburgh, however was under the name Guild instead of Gould but this is definitely the correct man.

Another person of the surname Guild also married in Edinburgh, in the same parish (Greyfriars) in 1792. Her name was Isabel Guild and she married Duncan McIntyre. On her marriage note it states her father is John Guild of East Lothian.

John Guild of East Lothian married Agnes Dick, they had 5 children (1764, 1769, 1762, 1771 and 1776) all were born in Gladsmuir, East Lothian.

My theory is John and Agnes are the parents of James Gould/Guild
Here's where the connections begin.

John Guild worked as a Wright/Labourer, at some point James also worked as a Labourer, so there's a small connection there. Although, James spent most of his life working as a Spirit Porter.

James Gould/Guild could have been born in East Lothian and just stated it was Edinburgh as it was fairly close, or his parent's were in Edinburgh at the time of his birth which is why there is no birth note for him.

John Guild and Agnes Dick, according to their marriage note from Gladsmuir, got a marriage certificate in Edinburgh, I'm not sure if this is unusual though.

This one is my main connection between them. James had a daughter named Isabel Agnes Gould, could this be named after his mother and sister? It was unusual back then to have a middle name.

I can post the BMD certificates if people are wanting to look at them, themselves.
