Other Countries / Margaret Finlay - married Jamaica 1932
« on: Sunday 18 February 24 12:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Margaret Finlay was born in York, England late 1907, but was brought up in Northumberland, England.

Daughter of Joseph Finlay (1875-1957) and Jane Richardson (1874-1936).

I can't seem to find her after the 1921 England Census where she is living with her parents and siblings in Morpeth, Northumberland, England.

There are no marriages in the UK that fit and no obvious death.

She doesn't seem to be on the 1939 Register.

Ancestry and FamilySearch have a marriage in Elgin, Jamaica 8th June 1932 of a Margaret Finlay, born about 1907 (daughter of Joseph Finlay) to a Jabez Samuel Daley (son of John Finlay and Catherine Daley - not sure why he has his mother's surname).

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVS5-CBQZ

Can anybody please tell me if this is my Margaret Finlay?

I can't find any other records of either Margaret Finlay (Daley) or her husband (no emigration or deaths, or any children) in any country.

Can anybody please help?

Thanks.

Northamptonshire / William Thorpe - died Peterborough 1960's
« on: Tuesday 24 October 23 23:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm trying to find the death details of William Robert Thorpe (born Norfolk, England 29th March 1912).

He married in Peterborough in 1935 to Hilda May McDonald and had 5 children.

He left her and had children to a married woman Joan West (married name Werninck).

The youngest child was born in 1960 and said his dad died in Peterborough when he was about 4.

But there is no record of his death, burial or obituary in Northamptonshire in the 1960's.

Some family tree's online have him dying in Norfolk in 1967, but his son says that's not him as he died when he was there in Peterborough, and he definitely wasn't as old as 7.

Can anybody please find a record of death for William Robert Thorpe in Peterborough approximately 1964?

Thanks.

The Common Room / Louisa Stupples b. Ramsgate, Kent 1855
« on: Sunday 09 July 23 19:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi

My ancestor, Louisa Stupples was born in Ramsgate, Kent, England in 1855.

She was the daughter of George Stupples (1823-1881) and Jemima Butler (1825-1881).

In 1880, Louisa married William Harman (1859-1936).

They had a daughter, Elizabeth Louisa Harman (1880-1953) - born in St Lawrence, Kent, England.

This is the family in the 1881 census in Ramsgate, living with Louisa's parents (George and Jemima Stupples):

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/7572/images/KENRG11_987_990-0458?pId=8484733

In 1891, William Harman is living in Islington, London, England with his "wife" Annie Harman, and his children:
Elizabeth Harman (aged 10);
Beatrice Harman (aged 2);
William Harman (aged 11 months):

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/6598/images/LNDRG12_166_169-0129?pId=7993700

Going off the GRO index, Beatrice and William Harman's mother's maiden surname was Maskell.

The marriage of William Harman and Annie Elizabeth Maskell doesn't seem to happen until 1920.

I thought initially that Louisa Harman (Stupples) must have died between 1881 and 1889 (the birth of Beatrice Harman), but there are no deaths or burials for her in England.

There is one Louisa Harman died in Kent in 1883 (aged 69), which I thought may have been a mis-print of the age, but I've found her probate record and it states she was a widow from Canada now living in Kent.

And there is a burial for a Louisa Harman-Fisher in Brompton Cemetery (London) in 1885 (death age recorded as 31), which I thought must have been her which I added to Findagrave.

However, someone has since uploaded her grave photo and the inscription gives her parents which are completely different to George and Jemima Stupples, so that is incorrect.

I'm now thinking that William Harman and Louisa seperated, and he lived with Annie Maskell, but couldn't marry her until 1920 due to bigamy laws?

But where is Louisa Harman (Stupples) after 1881?

Can anybody please help?

Thanks.

Darin.

The Common Room / Ethel Cecilia Odell b.1885
« on: Monday 03 July 23 21:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi

My ancestor, Ethel Cecilia Odell (born Ramsgate, Kent, England 1885) seems to have disappeared after 1921.

She was the daughter of Joseph Odell (1849-1936) and Susan Elizabeth Stupples (1850-1907).

She is in the 1891 census in Margate, and the 1901 and 1911 census in Ramsgate:

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discoveryui-content/view/16370149:6598

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discoveryui-content/view/6899717:7814

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discoveryui-content/view/50869920:2352

She is also in the 1921 census with her sister Charlotte Odell in Hammersmith, London (although I haven't got access).

After this she disappears.

No marriage or death that fits.

I can't see an obvious listing for her in the 1939 Register.

And no passenger list that I can find.

There is a family of Odell's in Biggleswade but these are unrelated.

Her sister (Gladys May Odell) seems to have moved to South Africa and married a Frank Lionel Sandy in Durban in 1920.

I thought Ethel may have followed, but she's still in England in 1921.

Can anybody please help to find her?

Thanks.

Derry (Londonderry) / Michael Devlin (born c.1850's)
« on: Friday 16 June 23 17:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am attempting to trace the Devlin family from Newcastle upon Tyne, England back to Ireland.

Michael Devlin (going off census ages born circa 1845-1856) - probably in Derry (Londonderry), son of John Devlin.

The first mention of him in England is his marriage to Ann Curran in Newcastle in 1874.

(I haven't got a copy of the marriage for this).

They had several children, all christened Catholic.

This is the family in Newcastle in 1881:

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discoveryui-content/view/17143774:7572

This is the family in Newcastle in 1891 (birthplace given as Derry):

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discoveryui-content/view/6441715:6598

This is the family in Newcastle in 1901:

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discoveryui-content/view/30661684:7814

Michael's wife (Annie Devlin (Curran)) died in Newcastle in 1903.

It looks like Michael Michael re-married in Newcastle in 1905 to Margaret Ann Thorpe (maiden name Young):

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6XZH-GW8W

This record gives Michael's father's name of John Devlin.

This is Michael Devlin in the 1911 census (birthplace looks like it could be County Antrim?):

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discoveryui-content/view/35535720:2352

He died in Newcastle in 1930.

I can't find any record of his roots in Ireland (his birth is before civil registration, and I can't find him in Catholic parish registers - probably Derry, but possibly in Antrim).

There are a few trees on ancestry but it looks like they all have gathered the same information as me.

Can anybody please help to find the family in Ireland?

Thanks.

Darin.

The Common Room / Charles Henry Elliott b.1879 Lambeth
« on: Saturday 25 March 23 23:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

My Great-Uncle Charles Henry Elliott was born in Lambeth, London, England in 1879.

The son of Robert Elliott (1829-1881) and Emma Briggs (1837-1896).

1 year old in 1881 in Lambeth:

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/7572/images/LNDRG11_598_600-0162?pId=20687224

He joined the Royal Artillery (No. 19184) in 1897, and was posted to India but was permanently discharged in April 1899 due to a perforated eardrum.

His Service record states that he was in Britain at the time of his discharge (Home).

https://www.findmypast.co.uk/search/results?sourcecategory=armed+forces+%26+conflict&sid=101&lastname=elliott&soldiernumber=19184&keywordsplace_proximity=5&sourcecountry=great+britain

I can't find him after this.

He doesn't seem to show up on the 1901 or 1911 census.

And there is no obvious death for him.

A tree on ancestry has his death as "1902 South Africa" but I can't see any overseas deaths for that, or any re-enlistment.

Can anybody please help to find him please?

Thanks

Darin.

England / John Henry Bassey b.1897
« on: Saturday 28 January 23 09:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I'm stuck with this fellow:

John Henry Bassey - born Newcastle upon Tyne 22nd July 1897.

The son of Jane Toward Gascoine (1877-1967) and John Henry Bessey (Bessy) b.1866 Winterton, Norfolk - died 1897 Newcastle:

For some reason John Henry sr. was Bessey but his son is named Bassey:

After John Henry Bessey died in 1897, Jane Toward Gascoine re-married to her first cousin William Toward (1875-1945), and had several Toward children.

John Henry Bassey jr. is in the 1901 census living with his mother and maternal grandparents in Byker, Newcastle:

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/7814/images/NBLRG13_4789_4790-0381?pId=30665377

He is listed up to 1904 in the local school admission record in Newcastle, which gives his date of birth as 22nd July 1897:

https://www.findmypast.co.uk/search/results?firstname=john%20h&lastname=bassey&yearofbirth=1897&yearofbirth_offset=2&sourcecountry=great%20britain&sourcecategory=education%20%26%20work&sid=999

And in 1911 he is in Byker, Newcastle with his maternal grandparents (Gascoine), but not with his mother and her 2nd husband:

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/2352/images/rg14_30663_0365_03?pId=35554947

Then he disappears.

I can't find him in First World War records, or the 1921 census.

Also no obvious marriage or death records.

I've seen a couple of merchant seaman records for "John Bassey" but I can't see anything that points directly to him.

I've tried both sets of surnames:

Bassey and Bessey (Bessy).

Can anybody please try to help find him?

Thanks

Darin (Newcastle upon Tyne).

Kent / Henry Champs b.1817
« on: Tuesday 27 December 22 18:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I'm looking for the death of my 4 x Great-Grandfather Henry Champs.

1). Henry Champs was born in Sarre, Kent, England in approximately 1817 (son of James Champs (1781-1852) and Amelia White (1782-1862).

2). Henry Champs married Harriet Hancock (1820-1898) in St Alphage, in Canterbury, Kent in 1838.

3). They had several children:

Jane Hancock Champs (1838-1877);
George Champs (1840-1900);
Eliza Ann Champs (1843-1901);
William Hancock Champs (1845-1873);
Henry Champs (1847-1932);
Angelina Champs (1850-1927);
Laura Champs (1852-1883);
Eleanor Maxted Champs (1854-1938);
Charles Arthur Champs (1856-1924).

4). In the 1851 Census they are in Chislet, Kent:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGLX-87T

5). In 1861 Harriet is in Ramsgate with 2 of her children.

Henry isn't there, but it still states she's married?

Where is Henry? Is he dead or at a different address on census night?

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M752-T12

6). In 1871 Harriet (spelt Hariot) is in Ramsgate (St. Laurence) with her daughter Ellen and a William Baker.
Henry isn't with her.
I can't find this on Familysearch (only on FindMyPast) so I can't determine if it says that Harriet is a widow or not.

7). In 1878 it looks like Harriet Champs re-married to John Langley.

8). In 1881 they are in Ramsgate:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q27W-KDGB

9). In 1891 the widowed Harriet Langley is living in Ramsgate (address Plains of Waterloo - which is the street her daughter Eliza Ann Champs (married name Stupples lived in so I'm convinced it's her).

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2MW-K2M

10). There is a tree on ancestry that has Harriet dying in 1898. There is a Harriet Langley dying in 1898.
The same tree has Henry Champs dying in 1906.

Why would he still be alive after Harriet re-married?

I don't think it's my Henry Champs.

I'm convinced Henry Champs died between 1856 and 1878 but I can't find anything to support it.

Can anybody help to find the death of Henry please?

Thanks.

Australia / William and Florence Macrae - NSW
« on: Monday 21 November 22 07:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

William MacRae (unsure of birth or origin) married in 1905 to Florence Ellen Stupples (born England 1883) in South Africa:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KDCG-5XH

I have found 1 son born in South Africa 1907 - William Donald Macrae:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6NH9-LGMF

They must have emigrated to Australia not long after.

I think I have found the births of 2 daughters in New South Wales (Rhoda Margaret Macrae 1911, and Irene Florence MacRae 1913):

https://familyhistory.bdm.nsw.gov.au/lifelink/familyhistory/search/result?6

William and Florence divorced around 1922.

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/16004773?searchTerm=%22Macrae%20v%20macrae%22

I have found 2 possible re-marriages for Florence:

1. James G. Harriss - North Sydney 1924.

2. Henry Palmer - Glen Innes 1926.

There is an engagement notice for Irene Florence MacRae in 1938 to Kenneth Walker Dun:

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/229137236?searchTerm=macrae%20%22centennial%20park%22

It says she is the younger daughter of W. MacRae of Centennial Park.

I have found a possible death of William MacRae in Sydney district 1958 (based on his father was called Donald, and he named his son William Donald).

I am looking for the death places and years for:

William MacRae (possibly 1958);

Florence Ellen MacRae (Harris / Palmer?);

Irene Florence Dun (nee MacRae);

Kenneth Walker Dun;

Rhoda Margaret MacRae.

If anybody can help I would be very grateful.

Thanks

Darin (England).
