Northumberland / Advice needed
« on: Monday 06 April 09 22:57 BST (UK)  »
I am coming to UK from Australia in 7 weeks time and will be spending 5 nights in Newcastle. I was born ib Byker but moved to London when I was very young so don't remember much about it. Can anyone point me to the best places to visit for help with my family history. My Northumberland surnames are Matfin, Jobling, White, Snowball, Fraser, Watson, and Hall. My ancesters occupations were Shipwrights, Keelmen, and Coalminers. I would really appreciate any advice, thanks, Jabawak

US Completed Requests / Fay Hoevy Purdy New York State
« on: Sunday 28 September 08 05:54 BST (UK)  »
Would someone be able to find me information on Fay Hoevy Purdy born around 1860 in New York State. How would I be able to find his birth? What information is online?  I have seen the 1880 census but cannot be sure it is the right person as they only give the middle initial. I don't have access to Ancestry and would be very grateful for any help, thanks Jabawak

Is there an expert on Whitechapel out there? My great great grandfather was living at 28 Lemon Street when his son was christened at St George in the East in 1844. I believe it is also known as Leman street. His occupation was Inspector of Police. I have googled and found that there is a firm of solicitors at that address now. What I would really like to know is if this is likely to be the same building and if so what its history is. I hope some one can help me please, Jabawak

Could anyone tell me if policemen lived at the police station in those days. I remember when I was a child in London, that a girl at my school lived in the police station. My 2nd grt grandfather was a policeman, his name was John Donegan and I have him as a police seargent living in Orange Street Bethnal Green on the parish record of my great grandfather's christening in 1837. Then I have just found the christening of a grt grt uncle Edward Donegan, John is listed as Inspecter of police and they are living at 28 Lemon Street, Whitechapel. This was in 1844. Would Whitechapel have been part of the Metropolitan Police? I am trying to find out everything I can about John Donegan because he states Ireland as his place of birth on all census records and nowhere does he say which part. If any one can help me in any way I would be most grateful, Jabawak

Northumberland Lookup Requests / John Joseph Jobling b1875
« on: Monday 12 February 07 02:03 GMT (UK)  »
Would someone please be able to look for the christening of John Joseph Jobling. He was registered in Tynemouth district in Dec 1/4 1875. His parents were Robert Jobling and Jane Ann. I have been through the parish records for Walker and found all his siblings, but he isn't there. His mother was born in Wallsend so it could have been there. On census records it gives either North Shields or Wallsend as place of birth. I tried getting the film for Christchurch Tynemouth but it finished at the end of 1874 and started again 1896. So as it is difficult being in Oz, could someone please help me.  Jabawak

Northumberland Lookup Requests / I need help with Joseph Hall
« on: Monday 03 July 06 02:21 BST (UK)  »
Please could someone help me with my 2nd gr grandfather. I have the marriage of Joseph Hall to Elizabeth Watson on 9 April 1855 at St. Johns Newcastle. I have them on 1871/1891 censuses. On 1861 Elizabeth is with her parents in Willington, but Joseph isn't with her. I think I may have found him in Portsmouth, his age isn't consistant with the other censuses and he gives his place of birth as North Shields, he is also down as unmarried. He gives his birthplace as Willington Quay on some and Howden on others. Although I am a geordie by birth I haven't been to Northumberland since about 1945 and I live in Australia, so am not too sure on geography of the area. I seem to be rambling a bit but could someone look for Joseph on 1851 and 1841 census. I know his father was John Hall a shipwright as Joseph was too, and Joseph would have been born circa 1834/5, thanks Jabawak
