« on: Saturday 15 January 05 23:35 GMT (UK)  »
Looking in Penicuik for 1861 census:
James McLean HUNTER b. 1833 West Linton, Peebles and wife Margaret b. 1836. and
son George Robertson HUNTER b. 1857 Penicuik.
James was a land surveyor/architect.  There may be other children.

No absolutely sure about the Penicuik bit but Margaret died there in 1862 and James in 1869.

Thanks for any help, Kay

Hi Lorna

Thank you so much for doing the extra searching for me. :)  I am truly stumped though as to where Peter and his family ended up on the 1881 census.  :(   I am going to check 1881 England census to see if they were there.  Otherwise perhaps they were just missed off the census altogether???  I found them in 1891 at 85a Fountainbridge, Edinburgh.  That is Peter ORR, Agnes, Elizabeth and a son Charles born 1884.  There was also another son, George Archibald ORR born 1868 but I haven't found out anything about him.  Thanks for finding Louis COLLINS for me.  I don't know if the other COLLINS with an ORR staying with them are mine or not but I will keep a note of them.  I haven't found Louis and Christina on the 1891 census.  Elizabeth Laing ORR Married Joseph Cowan in 1893 and I found them still in Fountainbridge in 1901.  They were my husband's great-grandparents.  .  I found Agness ORR again on the 1901 census at 87 Fountainbridge and Charles was with her there.  She was listed as a widow.Thank you so much for taking the time to help me - I really appreciate it.

Hi Lorna

Thanks for the latest. Not sure about those Alexanders but James Harrold Weir family is definitely mine.

Could you possibly look in the 1881 census for another family for me?  Found them on 1891.

Peter ORR b. <1849> Linlithgow, lorryman
Agnes C. ORR b. 1843 Haddington/N. Berwick
Christina ORR b. 1866 Edinburgh, worked in  rubber factory
Elizabeth L. ORR b. 1874 Edinburgh

Also
Louis COLLINS b. 1859 Edinburgh.  Worked in rubber factory.   His parents were Peter and Margaret but have no dates for them.

Thanks Kay

Hi Lorna

The Alexander was not mine - wrong parents. Mine had James and Catherine for parents.  The William with Margaret in Brown Place was mine as was the William with Alexander and Jane.  Thank you.  If there are any remaining could you post them?  Thanks once again for all your help.

Thanks Lorna.

I think the middle Alexander is mine.  He was born in Caithness in 1861.  His parents were James and Catherine.

Can you also send info on the Williams born in 1865, 1869 and 1874 as they could be mine.

Thanks again, Kay

Caithness / Re: SUTHERLAND FAMILY ON CENSUS
« on: Thursday 06 January 05 05:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Pam

I don't have access to the 1881 Latheron census but I think you have found my family.   Alexander and Margaret had a son called Alexander Sutherland also who was born in 1837 - I wondered if the grandchildren could be his?  They could of course belong to Catherine who is 41 and unmarried according to this census.  Problem is though that I have her married and living in Edinburgh on the 1881 census and she would be 46.  Bit of a puzzle.  I would be interested in the other Alexander Sutherlands that you have.  Kay

Canada / LANCASHIRE TO CANADA - how to find
« on: Saturday 01 January 05 22:03 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone suggest how I can find out how a relative ended up in Hamilton, Ontario?  She is Annie HARPER born 1881 in Lancashire and married Jack ROWLEY (not absolutely sure of spelling).  They were in Hamilton, Ontario in 1954 and he was a carpenter perhaps with his own business.  It is thought he built furniture.  How can I possibly trace them?  I have hit a brick wall with this one.  Any help gratefully appreciated.

Caithness / WEIR/THOMSON and WEIR/MACADIE marriages - help
« on: Saturday 01 January 05 21:40 GMT (UK)  »
I have found two marriages that are possibilities for my families but I don't know if they are the right ones.

I have Hellen WEIR marrying James THOMSON on 2 May 1856 in Wick.  I have no parents for either so I need to know if this Hellen is the daughter of William WEIR and Catherine (Nee MALCOLM) and was born in 1838 in Wick.

Also her brother John WEIR born 1831 may have married Margaret MACADIE 24 September 1852 in Wick.

How can I verify I have the correct marriages for these people?  I also need to find them on the census if possible.

Thanks for any help, Kay
