Armed Forces / Re: Army Deserters Lists on FindMyPast - source of data?
« on: Thursday 08 June 23 15:29 BST (UK)  »
Last year when I needed to look for a deserter in some of the Police Gazettes which are not online, I found they were available at the National Archives.  I'm not sure which year or years you need, but for example, years 1828 to 1845 are HO 75/1 to HO 17/18.  They should be possible to find through the catalogue, by searching for the title and then homing in on the year or years so that you can order what you need.

The Common Room / Re: FindMyPast email

For me the email about the new subscription rate, increase described as only £5 a year with no mention to of loyalty discount, when it would actually be £32 increase, was followed the next day by the email saying I had changed my subscription when I had done nothing at all.  This seemed to me such poor customer communication that I messaged them.  Reply is apologetic, says the email about the subscription change was sent in error and I can check the subscription rate on their website.  I would be more reassured if they communicated more carefully.

London and Middlesex / Re: Missing daughter

The 'home for distressed stage folk' might have been the 'Theatrical Mission'.  By the 1890s it had its own building, Macready House, in Henrietta Street, Covent Garden.  From the many newspaper reports about it, it seems that together with non-denominational evangelical christianity it provided a place for women and young people working in theatre to eat and relax between rehearsals and performances, and support for those out of work too.  There was some sleeping accommodation and a small orphanage for children of theatrical parents.

My parents had to go and see the Dean of Chichester after their wedding to get an error corrected . . . can't now remember what they said it was.

The Common Room / Re: Children's Nursery (Newburn)

There was increased nursery and nursery school provision in the 1940s so that mothers could work and to support under school age children during evacuation.  Looking in newspapers I can't see anything mentioned in Newburn, but there are ads showing that County Durham had provision of this kind, so presumably Northumberland did too.

It's on this 1847 Town Plan, left hand side, just below St Mary's Church and just above Quarry Hill:

For Benjamin Edwards the image of the 1871 census just says Cary, no Fitzpaine.  The 1861 census says Carew.  I've had problems like this with placenames when Pembrokeshire people move west and enumerators provide imaginative spellings.  Again, from other census years it looks as though John Roach's surname was Roch, and Castlemartin his place of birth.  Best to check, though, I only had a quick look.

According to the Wikipedia article, the silver Maria Theresa thaler was widely used in world trade from the 18th to the 20th century, including in Muscat and Oman.  References for the article also refer to it as the Maria Theresa dollar.
