I personally don't need anything but it's evident that others do!  ;D  My time is too precious now to waste on correcting others' errors but as this platform has been useful for me in the past, it just might prove useful to others.  ;)

Staffordshire / Ann DAINTY - Elusive Marriage 1830
« on: Wednesday 25 July 18 17:43 BST (UK)  »
Circa 1992 two polite postal enquiries, with SAEs, received no response from the incumbent of Barton-under-Needwood for a look-up for a marriage c1830 between John HOLMES and Ann DAINTY, for which I would happily have paid a fee. After years on the 'back-burner', imagine my delight when I recently encountered images on-line at FindMyPast:

Barton-under-Needwood Marriage in the Chapel by Banns ... John Latham, Offg Minister.
01 Jun 1830     John HOLMES    (sgd)    otp    Bachelor
No 79                Ann DAINTY        (sgd)   otp    Spinster
Witnesses:        Mary HANSEN    (sgd) &  William DAINTY    (sgd)

Banns had been called at Barton-under-Needwood and Yoxall parishes but it appears on Ancestry there are some researchers who have risked hazardous guesses.    ::)

From the Criminal Register it appears that was Mary CULLINGFORD's third conviction, hence the transportation.

The case was heard at Portsmouth Borough Sessions and the Hampshire Chronicle Monday 09 April 1838 reported that the 'blanket & c.', the property of John EDWARDS, was stolen at Portsea.  There are several of his name in Portsea in 1841:  do you have any idea of his trade?

Unfortunately the British Library Newspaper Archive OCR presented problems, not only from the original hyphenatiion of Mary's surname, which is why it took me a while to locate the Chronicle report and make a load of necessary corrections.  If I persevere, it may be possible to locate other newspaper reports,  but don't hold your breath!  If you'd like a copy of my transcription, please PM me with your email address.

If Mary had any dependent children it is likely they would have been repatriated to their respective Poor Law Union of parishes of origin. I've not encountered anything that records Mary a widow.

Happy hunting!

CHH junior does seem to be a very shady character - army, navy, air force, "explorer" etc etc as well as bankrupt, divorce.

Downcraig, there was absolutely nothing about him 'shady': proceedings for bankruptcy instigated 1904 whilst he was abroad recruiting African natives to bring a village to UK for the Bradford Exhibition. The adjudication was Annulled and Receiving Order Rescinded Oct 27 1905, it appearing that all the debts had been paid in full.

He subsequently successfully pursued his share of the profits in a Civil Action HASTINGS v BAMBERGER [Dispute as to an African Exhibition] reported in The Times Thursday 5th December 1907 pg9, Issue 38508, col D, so he was justified in describing himself 'Explorer'. I'm now aware that many of both sexes reverted to their single status after divorce, probably to enable a second marriage in church?  CHH was honest about his age, unlike his first bride, and he certainly engaged in yachting and motorboat racing pursuits, after his military career!

I'll send you a PM with my email address if you'd like to reciprocate off-site with details of CHH/Carla divorce and I can then send you my research as attachments.

Ian, I do indeed but I've not touched ground since 2005 on this 'twig', although I suspected CHH was not the 'Bachelor' Explorer that he claimed at 1905 marriage to young Alice, daughter of John DEANE, Gamekeeper to the GIFFARDs of Chillington Hall! So far as I am aware there were no issue to this couple and he left his fortune to the lady who nursed him to the end, Alice having predeceased him.

I would be interested to receive feedback on his divorce. In the meantime I'll dig out my old files.

That’s brilliant, Ian!  Thank you so much for tying up that loose end. The parish was the one I anticipated but the paid researcher I employed failed to find it some years ago.

There does appear a discrepancy in the date of birth as his birth certificate states 30 March 1838.

I need to dig into my files as, if memory serves me correct, I had to get the details checked by the local Registrar as the reproduction copy ‘lifted’ from the GRO original was difficult to read in parts.

Once again, many thanks.

Berkshire Completed Look ups / Re: Newbury Weekly News - Obituary for William WESTALL 1880

Thanks so much for the tip, newburychap. I've become a bit rusty from brain fog. ;)

Thank you Paco and Stan for your input but I was hoping that someone local to Newbury might be in a position to check the NWN at the library around the date of burial.

I subscribe to both the FNRC [Friends of Newtown Road Cemetery] and the BL Newspaper Archive but digitization of the NWN post-1872 is unlikely to be available in my lifetime, and I'm no longer physically able to make the trip to undertake the search myself.

In addition to scaling rooftops, William WESTALL swam under the bridge at Wash-water in 1869;  the lad who fell through the ice in 1870 was able to calmly tread water for ten minutes until rescued.  William's occupation in 1871 was Painter Journeyman, likely employed by Samuel BIDDIS, and according to another son's statement recorded in the Reading Mercury in 1876, William was also a member of the Fire Brigade.
