No worries!

You could always ask Kendal to do a quick look up for you?  You know the rough date and there are only a few marriages a year in Orton anyway.

Good luck

I assume you mean me - not Gillian?!

I only have copies of Orton parish records for two brief(ish) periods and not back to the 17th century so I can't help you, I'm afraid.  It used to be the case that the Orton parish records before 1746 were not available online.  I wanted to track some Crosby Ravensworth people to Orton so I requested the registers for the periods in which I was interested.  I would love to have the entire register but I don't.

I have a vague feeling that I've answered a query about Hodgsons in Orton before?

Mayo / Re: Timblin,Timlin and variants
« on: Sunday 10 February 13 20:37 GMT (UK)  »

I am also interested (for the moment at least) in this Timlin family.

I expect you might have already discovered this but just in case:
Margaret Timlin is born 22 Dec 1848 and christened at St Mary Woolton on 31 Dec
John Timlin is born 08 Aug 1854 and christened at St Mary Woolton on 20 Aug.

These are the only two christenings in England I can find for children of Anthony and Eleanor.  I feel there should be more but I've had a very good look.  They do however give Eleanor's surname as Welsh which might help to track down their origins in co Mayo.

Also one of the godparents is a Thomas Welsh who may well be a brother to Eleanor.

My interest in this family comes from the other godparents:

Bridget Hallinan is lodging with Anthony & Eleanor Timlin on the 1851 census and is I think the first of three sisters to arrive in England from co Mayo.  The other two are Mary and Ann.  Ann is my husband's great*N grandmother.

Mary Hallinan is godmother to John Timlin together with godfather Henry McNicholas who marries Bridget Hallinan.  Eleanor Hallinan is godmother to Margaret Timlin but I think this may be an error by the priest.   I have tracked all three forwards and found that the Hallinans come from Mayo and their parents are David and Ann.

I think that people tended to pick close relatives for godparents in Liverpool at that time so I wonder if Anthony Timlin/Eleanor Welsh are uncle/aunt to the Hallinan sisters.  There is a gap of approximately 20 years between them.

Oh and there is another Timlin couple (Michael and Mary) having children in Woolton.  John is born 17 Jan 1851 and christened on 19 Jan.

I'll post separately about my Hallinans but thought you might want this information as well.

Hope something helps

Westmorland Lookup Requests / Johnson marriage licences

No Ralph Johns(t)one(s) at all.

A couple of John Johnson marriages in Tundergarth in 1714.  No Johns in Appleby between 1700 and 1730.

I'm not sure what St M is but I don't think there are any Thomas there between 1763 and 1788.  Can you clarify?

Sorry that it's not more helpful.  Bows to follow.

Hi Gillian
I've had a look for Bow(e)(s) and there do not appear to be any in Dufton but there are some in Brough.  Are these of interest?

Could you narrow the scope for the Johnson query - either for particular names or for a time range or preferably both?  I can't do a lookup on both surname and place combined.

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Re: 1841 Portsea lookup request for Hopgood family
« on: Saturday 08 December 12 16:32 GMT (UK)  »

This is what I have:

Edwin Hopgood 1858 - 1903 (dies Alverstoke) the son of Charles William Hopgood and Maria Browning.  He and his cousin Mary Ann Maria Hopgood 1861 - ? the daughter of Stephen Hopgood and Mary Ann Hewitt marry in 1878 in Portsea.

I have Edwin as a lath render on the 1881, a general dealer on the 1891 and a dealer in coal and wood on the 1901 census.  He declares bankruptcy in 1902 but as a greengrocer.  Some Hopgoods do seem to have a sideline as greengrocers and maybe he and his wife are following this tradition.

The brother Thomas living with Edwin and Mary Ann is (I think) HER brother and the enumerator has wrongly written his age as 31 (should be 34).

Mary Ann Maria Hopgood's parents: Stephen was born ca 1834 to Jacob (junior) and Mary Ann DAY.  He became a sawyer and married Mary Ann Hewitt in 1861.  Mary Ann Hewitt died in 1872 and Stephen in 1875 leaving their children as orphaned minors.  MAMH's two siblings Alice and Thomas were living with relatives on the 1881 - she with her aunt Ellen and he with his uncle William.

Edwin Hopgood's parents: Charles William was born ca 1833 to Jacob (junior) and Mary Ann DAY.  He became a lath shaver and then a timber merchant.  He married Maria BROWNING in 1852 and they had three children before she died in 1860.  I think CW then married his cousin Sarah Hopgood in 1866 and has one more child Jacob Frederick.  In the meantime his sister Ellen had acted as housekeeper.  He is declared bankrupt in 1868 and dies around 1891 (I think).

Jacob (junior) Hopgood and Mary Ann DAY marry in 1824 and have several children: Elizabeth Martha, William, Jacob, Charles William, (possibly a John Charles as well?). Stephen, Sarah and Ellen.  Mary Ann DAY dies in 1843 and Jacob remarries to an Eliza Plaskett in 1848.  Jacob is a carpenter and becomes a timber merchant.  I think it must be his death in 1867 that I have the certificate for.

Jacob was born ca 1805 in Southampton to Jacob (senior) and Martha.  Jacob (senior) was born ca 1768 and I think might have been a servant.  He dies in 1850.  Martha was born around the same time as her husband and dies before 1825 because Jacob marries a Jane Elizabeth Donaldson.

My hypothesis is that Jacob (senior) might have come from the IOW Hopgoods and his employment as a servant might have meant more travel than the norm.  I think he may have been in London at one stage.

Hope that helps.  It's not guaranteed to be right.  There are too many Charles Hopgoods born within a few years of each other that complicate things.  I haven't managed to push back much further than when I made the original post.  I'm really waiting for Hampshire parish records to become available online.  I spent quite a lot of time researching possible DAY connections but only came up with hypotheses rather than hard facts.

Deborah

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Re: 1841 Portsea lookup request for Hopgood family

Hi
The Hopgoods are my husband's family.

I have done a little more research since I last posted in this thread but not a great deal - I haven't got further back than Jacob senior (a servant).  I have found a few newspaper references to the family.  Jacob was giving evidence of good character for another timber merchant accused of theft and a Charles was being tried for animal cruelty.

There are several Hopgood families in or around Hampshire in the 19th century.

Do you have a particular question or any snippets of information?
regards
Deborah
