Armed Forces / a strange one
« on: Sunday 07 October 12 04:21 BST (UK)  »
hi all,
doing some research for a friend, she is trying to find out details on her grandfather, all she had was a name and a place in scotland. i have found him and his family but she has a family story of him in world war  II which i would like to verify or not, as the case may be.
he was born in 1898 so was in hid 40's at the time and believe he was stationed in/around/near manchester.
would a famer from scotland be in some sort of force which would require him to be so far away from home, especially given his age and occupation? if so, how would i be able to find out?
any ideas suggestions would be welcome, as i find it difficult to believe this situation would arise, but given the family circumstances ( which i wouldn't like to go into on an open forum) can find no other reason for the circumstances.

thanks everyone for your details and links, i'm glad it's not just me that has a problem with it. thought the old grey matter was drying up  ;D
i am afraid i'm not a paid up member of ancestry,  :(
elected to go with FindMyPast instead.  :D
they have some service records including my grandfather's original enlistment. wchich is interesting. i have accessed some of the battalion's war diaries before. but i'm blowed if i can remember how, so thanks for the link on those.
i am hoping to go to france next year and follow in his footsteps, so they would be invaluable. but a little costly, as each diary only covers one month. unless anyone knows of a way of finding out where the various battalion's were at certain times during the war.

( cameronians) but don't find it easy to access. has anyone else found this or does anyone know of an easy way to search the NA. any ideas would be appreciated

hi all,
got called away for work and went to blantyre straight from there, unfortunately. i don't have a lap top etc and do all my work at home so didn't pick up your replies until now when i have just got back. got to the cemetery yesterday and there is a lot of stones lying flat, there was infact a notice on the gates saying that some more vandalism occurred last month ( can't work out those mindless idiots who do that sort of thing ) toured the cemetery but to no avail, either the stones are down or the graves un-marked, i will have to e-mail them for my next visit. i presume, sancti, that you can only check on marked graves? if not, and you don't mind, i will still pm you the dates as i hope to get back up there again in a couple of weeks.
thank you both for the help
steve
