Shropshire / Re: MORRIS from Montford

...it seems possible that this Alice niece (of Ann LAIGHT, 1881) might have been born in 1873 Atcham, as there is no other Alice MORRIS, b. Shropshire near Shrewsbury, with an 1873 birth on the 1881 census or on the IGI...

...Alice niece of Ann, may be Ann's daughter because people often tried to hide out-of-wedlock births, and therefore maybe referred to Alice as a "niece".

...looking at the Jane MORRIS, b. 1847, Montford possibility for a mom still though...Jane appears quite clearly on the 1861 as a milk maid...

...on the 1871 there is an interesting Jane MORRIS, b. 1847, Shrewsbury in Bowdon, Cheshire...who might be this same Jane born Montford...the 1871 unfortunately wasn't very specific...

...my ggran Alice ended up in Pendleton, Lancs. which is in the area of Bowdon, Cheshire...maybe my ggran Alice ended up near her mom Jane afterall... :-\

...I'll check for the Shropshire parish records on a new thread and thanks for the site info...

...after all this, I think the free bmd Atcham 1873 6a, 716 Alice MORRIS birth most closely matches my ggran...

...the 1873 date fits the date passed down through the family

...I also think the aunt Ann (LAIGHT nee MORRIS) is the most likely for my ggrans Mom...Ann MORRIS was a servant in St. Chad, Shrewsbury on the 1871 census, (so Atcham should be correct for that location)...one of ggran's daughters was called Annie (and none of her six daughters were a Sarah or Jane)

...it's been interesting looking at these rural Shropshire families from laborers, milkmaids to servants....also some railroad connections...

...I'm now trying to find a Jane or Sarah MORRIS with a daughter, Alice 1875c.
as these seem the most likely right now...

...on the 1861 Jane MORRIS, 14,  1847, is a dairymaid in Forton, her birth village...

... Sarah, 16, 1845, is possibly a housemaid, in Shrewsbury...

...the 1871 is less clear for both Jane and Sarah, but I'll work on it...

...there is a Sarah MORRIS death, age 33, Atcham, 1879

...this Sarah who died would fit perfectly with an Alice, Sarah's daughter, living with Sarah's sister Ann...(Alice MORRIS, b. 1875, niece of Ann LAIGHT nee MORRIS living in Wolverhampton (1881)...)

...I shall keep trying!...you at least know the family of your ggran, even if there was no birth certificate...

...how do I go about searching the parish registers?

...my conclusion also, is that the Frederick MORRIS is a fictitious father's name of some sort, on my Alice's marriage certificate...

...the GRO couldn't find a Frederick MORRIS/Alice birth between 1872 to 1876 and ggran never mentioned her father's or mother's name

...searching the 1874/5/6 Atcham and Wolverhampton birth certificates seems to be a possible way to find further information or connections between the Ann LAIGHT niece Alice, b. 1875 Shropshire, and my ggran Alice, b. Staff, Wolverhamtpon (1901)...

...thank you :)

...I'm going to take a closer look at the Wm, John, Mary, and Jane options on the 1891...for niece Alice's parents...

...my ggran's 1898 marriage certificate said her father was Frederick MORRIS, gardener domestic...but the reason why I think my ggran may be this Alice, niece of Ann LAIGHT, is because this niece Alice is the only one of about the right age living in Wolverhampton.  The 1901 census lists my ggran as b. Staff, Wolverhampton.

...as you indicated, there are the 4 or so Atcham birth certificates possibles.  There are also couple of Wolverhampton 1874 birth certificates...so i'm trying to narrow the birth certificate down, for this Alice niece of Ann LAIGHT.

...i'm trying to find out which of the children below had a daughter Alice MORRIS, b. 1875, Shropshire.  Alice may be my greatgrandmother.

On the 1841, '51 and '61...a Thomas MORRIS, b. 1816, wife Sarah, 1821 appears with children:

Eliza, 1837
William, 1840
John 1842
Sarah 1845
Jane 1847
Martha 1850
Ann 1852
Mary 1855
Ester 1859

On the 1871, Sarah, 1821, widow, is living with son John, b. 1842 and famiy.

Martha TAYLOR, b. 1850 is married with a son William, b. Albrighton.

Ann, b. 1852 is a servant in St. Chad, Shrewsbury.

On the 1881 Ann LAIGHT, nee MORRIS, b. 1852 appears with a niece Alice living in Wolverhampton.

(Mom Sarah, b. 1821 and John, b. 1842 are still together in Montford).

Any connections to this family would be helpful.  Regards, Lesleyneland

On the earlier censuses there is a Thomas MORRIS, b. 1816, laborer, wife Sarah, and several children living in Montford, near Shrewsbury.

I am looking for information on this family because my ggran Alice Edith MORRIS might be related to these people.

...re: my greatgran Alice Edith ELLIS (nee MORRIS), b. 1873c. Staff. Wolverhampton (1901)

...her husband was George William ELLIS, b. 1872, (I've located him on the 1891 census in Pendleton, Lancs. with his family)

...the 1898 marriage certificate lists Alice as "Edith MORRIS", but I know it is her for sure...

...the marriage certificate has two witnesses:

1. N.J. SLACK, (I think), hard to read, and I haven't been able to identify him/her on the censuses at all...

2. Catherine ROBERTS...I tried finding her on the censuses, but there were quite a few Catherine ROBERTS on the censuses...I think she would have been a neighbour or fellow servant from nearby.

....I think ggran might have worked Heaton Norris, Cheshire, in the early 1890's, before her 1898 marriage, after which, she ended up in Pendleton, Lancashire, which is nearby...

On the 1901 in Heaton Norris, Cheshire, there appears to be a fellow servant, an Elizabeth PRICE, b. Staff, Dudley, age 49c., who was working with Alice on the 1891 in Codsall, near Wolverhampton.

This is the only way I can account for Alice's move north from the Wolverhampton region.

Any information available from the records would be useful...I think I'll get the June 1874 Wolverhampton birth certificate, although on free bmd there seems to be two references:

both vol 6b, one on page 577 and one on page 677...

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Alice MORRIS, 1874 Wolverhampton
« on: Sunday 01 April 07 01:15 BST (UK)  »
Looking for any further information that might be available about the 1874 birth certificates for Alice MORRIS in Wolverhampton.

My great gran was Alice Edith ELLIS nee MORRIS, and she died in 1931, age 58 according to her gravestone in Stockport, Cheshire.

She appears on the 1901 census as Alice ELLIS, (married name), b. Staff, Wolverhampton, age 26 (1875).

She married in Pendleton, Lancs. in 1898, age 25, (1973), father: Frederick MORRIS, gardener, deceased.  As I haven't been able to find an appropriate  Frederick,  I think she may have used her mother's maiden name for her father.

On the 1891 census there is an Alice MORRIS servant in Codsall, age 17, (1874), who I think might be her.

On the 1881 there is an Alice MORRIS niece, age 6, (1875), b. Shropshire, living in Wolverhampton with Ann LAIGHT, (nee MORRIS), who also might be ggran.  After researching, I can only find a Martha MORRIS, b. 1850, as a possible sister for Ann.

So my best estimation is that a Martha MORRIS or possible the "aunt" Ann might be this niece Alice's mother.

My ggran named two of her six daughters "Martha Alice" and "Annie", so they are both family names.

Information about those Wolverhampton birth certificates might further sort out the ggran puzzle.  She was considered a "mystery" to the family, and no information came down through the family about her parentage, or early background, except that she was "in service".   :-X

Thank you for any interest.
