United States of America / Re: Michael Craugh, Ireland then Iowa ?
« on: Thursday 24 September 09 00:18 BST (UK)  »
Nick and Shelly,

Thanks for giving this a go ! I didn't realize that Carlotta had remarried. So I think I am still looking for a death time period of 1900 to 1905.

I am also wondering if he just married her and then left her. You would think that he would be living with her in at least the 1900 Census.

I think he will be my family mystery ! The story in the family is that he left NY to go off and seek his fortune, obviously that never happened. But I don't think he lived any longer than 1905 because noone in the family ever heard from him again. And this was a very close family, with all relatives living in one small town in NY.

Thanks,
Megan

United States of America / Michael Craugh, Ireland then Iowa ?
« on: Tuesday 22 September 09 17:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone,

I have been trying to research my gg uncle. I have him up to 1898 in Iowa and then I lose him. I am open to any ideas of places to search next as I am at a loss. Here is what I have so far -

Michael P. Creagh/Craugh b. 18 Feb 1866 in Rathdowney, Co. Laois, Ireland

Parents - Martin Creagh McGrath and Anna Frye. The father Martin was a Baker and owned a Bakery on High St. in Ballyragget.

Immigrated to US (NY) - 23 May 1887 ( this info found on naturalization papers)

Naturalized -  22 Oct 1894 in Penn Yan, New York - this is where are of the rest of the family was living.

Marriage - 13 Apr 1898 to Ida Carlotta Lyle in Marion, Linn, Iowa.

On this marriage he lists his age as 27 but he was really around 32, I think he did this because it might have been a shotgun wedding. Ida Lyle was 17 at the time and the father of the bride is listed as the witness to the marriage.

That is the last record I have for Michael. His wife Ida is listed in the 1900 US Census for Iowa. She is living with here Aunt and Uncle. She is listed as Carlotta Craugh, married 2 yrs,  born Texas.

She is also listed on the 1905 Iowa State Census as Carlotta Craugh.

But there is no sign of Michael anywhere. The only other clue I have to a timeframe of a possible death is the fact that Michael Craugh's mother dies in 1903. In her obituary, it lists Michael as living in Clinton, Iowa.

So I at least know he was alive in 1903, or the family thought he was.

Any help or ideas on where to search next would be appreciated.

Oh and before I forget, if anyone does a search , I just want to let you know that there is another Michael Craugh in Iowa at the same time as mine. This Michael is a police officer and is married to a different woman. Unfortunately not my Michael.

The only clue that I have as an occupation for my Michael is that on his marriage cert, he lists his occupation as a Baker.

Thanks,
Megan

Lanarkshire / Re: Census Lookup 1901 for O'Neill

Hi Theresa,

Thank you for your post, but I should warn you that you might want to take your email address off of the post, just in case. ( you don't want to get alot of spam )

There is a private messaging system on this site and people can reply to you from there or just put in a new post.

Now about my O'Neill line - I have found out that my O'Neills originally came from Rothfortbridge and Mullingar, Co Westmeath. My gg grandfather Francis listed on the 1901 Ireland census that he was born in Westmeath.

Through that clue , I have managed to get back as far as someone being born around 1740.

So if you find that your O'Neills are also from Westmeath, please let me know.

Thanks,
Megan

Thank you Gadget and Aghadowey,

I have a question for Aghadowey,

You say not to mention it was from LDS, I just wanted to know why? Only because I have sent off for some BMD records and did mention LDS . So I am wondering if I made a huge mistake
Thanks,
Megan

« on: Sunday 31 May 09 21:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had access to obituaries for people who died in Bristol.

I have recently discovered that a relative died in Jun 1984 in Bristol.

Francis Curran O'Neill
b. 20 Sep 1909 in Motherwell, Lanarkshire,Scotland
d. Jun 1984 in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England

I am hoping at an obit will tell me if he married and had any children.

Thank you,
Megan

Hi JMF,

I am so glad that this memorial card has found someone. Like I said it was in a family member of mines possession.

His name was Fr. Seamus Sheeran, born in Durrow,Laois. They might have known each other from St. Kierans, Kilkenny at least that is where Seamus went .

Regards,
Megan

Jacquie,

I think you have done it again :) :) It does seem like those children are the Johnston children ( ages fit )  and they are just labeled Bergers.

Thank You, you have made my Aunt , Very Happy !! She had been searching for them for years, but couldn't find a connection. She had been searching the old fashioned way - not computers, letters and library !!

Thank God for computers and the internet !!!!
