I've only see the index - I'm still learning where to look for things online but suspect I'll need to do some proper legwork in the not too distant future (though I may need to wear "L" plates!).

Edit - Just seen your attachment, yes, definitely Jane!  If Im not being cheeky asking, where did you find that?

Wow, thank you for so many replies and so quickly too!.  I'm still relatively new to this so really appreciate all help given.

The census information looks good as bottle making is definitely a theme in the next generation & I'm currently looking into whether Mary Ann's son (ie Mary & Andrew's grandson) was one of the bottlemakers drowned at Seaham Harbour in June 1873.

In naming her own children Mary Ann seemed pretty hot on following the naming convention of the time and then repeating if children died, so if her parents did the same thing then William looks a good possibility for Mary's father & possibly Richard for Andrew's father.

The marriage is still a puzzle though, but since no-one else can find it then I think I'm going to have to live with the not recorded / didn't survive / 'irregular marriage' theory unless or until something different comes to light.

Again, huge thanks for all replies & messages.

Glamorganshire / Re: A German in Aberdare 1840s?

Unfortunately I cant even say for certain that her parentage was German, for all I know she was simply born in Germany to British parents - I know that she spoke both Welsh & English whereas her husband spoke only Welsh.

Her father being Henry (or possibly Heinrich!) doesn't really narrow things down either....

I think I've found her in Troed-y-Rhiw in 1841 & her occupation looks like Agricultural Labourer, which seems odd for a 20 year old woman, so I need to maybe look into that a bit more for any clues.

Northumberland / COMPLETED Mary DRYDEN - Missing marriage or wrong bride?
« on: Monday 24 March 14 02:31 GMT (UK)  »
Trying to find the marriage of my GGGG Grandparents, Andrew Knox & Mary Dryden (Driden) abt 1810, presumably in Newcastle.  If you can trace their parents too then even better!

Andrew & Mary's first born is Mary Ann Knox born 26/11/1811 christened 22/03/1812 at Newcastle upon Tyne, High Bridge Meeting House.  Parents stated as Andrew Knox, native of parish of Goswick of Holy Island and Mary Driden native of (Newcastle?) parish of All Saints.

Other children of Andrew & Mary are (dates are baptisms):

Richard Knox: 14/08/1814
Elizabeth Knox: 12/05/1816
William Knox: 15/06/1818
David Knox: 27/09/1820
Dinah Knox: 09/05/1822
Andrew Knox 28/06/1826
John Dryden Knox: 05/06/1829

All good so far except the only marriage I can trace is 15/11/1810 between Andrew Knox and JANE Dryden at Saint John, Newcastle Upon Tyne.

As the names Mary & Jane aren't remotely alike I have to assume its a different couple, but as all other searches have drawn a blank any help you experts out there can give would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Jenie

I too had family living in Lumsden Street including two infants who died within 24 hours of each other from Whooping Cough, although this was 1878 so probably just a bit too early.   I have the marriage record of their parents but it just says "The Parish Church" which I believe was St Pauls.

As for where Lumsden Street was, this description may help:

"Interspersed within the triangle formed by Mandale Road, George Street and Darlington Street (now part of Thornaby Road) were a collection of residential streets perhaps forgotten now, like Caledonia Street, Carlisle Street, Lumsden Street, Cross Street, Hibernia Street and Butterwick Place."

My Dad was born in Darlington Street and remembers the old area well - he's not so great on the churches but still drinks at the club in Thornaby every weekend without fail!

I seem to remember seeing a map on a chat site I'm on- could take a while to find but if I do I'll let you know.

PS - Another thought.  To narrow down the potential infant birth / deaths have you tried the Stockton Roots website.  Their records cover Thornaby 1875 - 1948 but exclude the wider Middlesbrough area.  If you start with the deaths then cross reference those names with births, then exclude any years you already have surviving children for, you should hopefully have a manageable number to look into further.

Glamorganshire / A German in Aberdare 1840s?
« on: Saturday 22 March 14 01:37 GMT (UK)  »
Need help trying to trace the birth / parents / siblings of my GGG Grandmother Mariah / Maria Smith born c1816-1818 (varies by document) in Hessen-Kassel, Germany.

On 24/12/1842 Maria Smith aged 24 marries Thomas Morgan in the Parish Church of Aberdare, both of Abernant Village. Maria's father is given as Henry Smith, Mason.  I can trace her life after this, but everything before is a blank.  The only other clue I have is the 1871 Wales census showing a Henry Smith, Agricultural Labourer born c1793 in Abernant living with daughter (?) Mariah in Conwil Elfet, Carmarthenshire.  This is definitely not a numerical typo for "my" Mariah though as she is in Moss Way, Aberdare with husband Thomas and various other family members.  Could be a complete red herring, I don't know.

The reference to Germany has completely paralysed all rational thought so any ideas / findings/ suggestions etc will be very gratefully received!

There are records of several Rippons baptised in Whitburn around the right time but none of them Agnes unfortunately - the nearest is Ann b 1685 to Margaret.  Other children to the same mother are Robert (1688) and William (1691).
