Completed Census Requests / Re:Census/Reference Records I have
« on: Saturday 07 February 04 23:54 GMT (UK)  »
HOW TO REQUEST A LOOKUP

We have seen the "I WILL DO 1891 CENSUS" grow into so many pages now,  so we have had to think of a way to handle census requests.

If you could each please start a "New Topic" with subject line very clearly stating the year of the census you require, the county and the surname of the person(s) you are seeking as follows:

1891 CENSUS REQUEST CHESHIRE   YAPP

or

WORKHOUSES REQUEST SHROPSHIRE  PARR

...and so on....

Then in the body of the message enter the details of your request. A person willing to carry out a lookup for you will then simply reply to your message, initially with "I will do a lookup for you, bear with me" (or something like that) then later followed by what they have found for you.

HOW TO OFFER LOOKUPS
If you have census information or other information that you are willing to carry our lookups for then please state in your subject line LOOKUP OFFER and the details of you lookup resources. If you could then enter details of the lookup material that you have and please include the following line at the very end of your message:

"For a look up request please start a new topic"

We will ask the moderators to "lock" each "LOOKUP OFFER" as soon as possible after it has been posted so that people cannot reply to it directly.

FINALLY
We hope this system will help all of us with lookup requests, and make it a little easier.  ;)

Holywell is quite a small delighful place. If you ever come over to the UK, it's worth a visit to see the St Winnifred's Well, to where people used toflock to get a miracle cure of their ills. Anyhow, I've spent some time on Google, and found the following:

A subsidiary company called the Greenfield Copper and Brass Company had a manufacturing base in Flintshire. This company took the copper from the Stanley works and reacted it with calamine in the cementation process to make brass. This was then used to make a wide variety of articles. The manufacturing techniques used are described in the section on the Brass Industry.

This list of coal mines does not list coal mines in 1854, so we can presume again that it wasnot a COAL mine:

Somerset / Re:Cemeteries in Somerton?
« on: Monday 26 January 04 10:22 GMT (UK)  »
Lynda,

I've done a little bit if work for you:

On the site that I gave you earlier, is this bit on the Parish of Somerton:
(The web page might look a bit strange because you're supposed ot reach it by my previous link - it's lost it's "frames")
http://www.somerset.gov.uk/archives/ASP/parish.asp?Parish=Somerton

I rang them up (+44 1823 278805) and spoke to a very helpful lady called Paula Lewis. She told me that Somerton was a very small place. They have the Church records there up to the year 1962, and can look it up for you. They do charge money for this (22 british pounds per hour), but she said it sounded very straight forward - she said to email them with the details to "see what we can do".
A cemetery also opened in the village in 1875 - so your great granmother may be buried there. The lady said they didn't think that they had the cemetary records there, but she would have to check. Like I said, email them and see what happens.

Here's a modern map of Somerton (you can see the Cemetery 'Cemy' and the main parish Church - a cross on a square box):
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=348500&y=128500&z=3&sv=348500,128500&st=4&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf&dn=843

Also if you go to the link below, and go to advanced search "Digital Download" with "somerton" under place name, select the 1kmx1km view - you can see the cemetary very clearly in the top-right. I think for thechurch you'd have to scroll to the right.

Have fun!

Lynda,

I know it's not much but you could try contacting them at the Somerset Council, here is the address for the archives office there:

Carol,

I'm not sure on this one - I'm guessing now, but I would guess that if it said "Born Ayr, Largs" then the place of birth is "Largs, in Ayrshire" - they might have abbreviated Ayrshire to "Ayr".

Can somebody do a lookup for Carol?
