Antrim / McCullen & Gribben
« on: Thursday 04 November 10 00:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hello i'm looking for the Marriage of my 4x Great Grandparents Patrick or James McCullen and Jane Gribben. They have two children i know of who came to Scotland with Jane (Patrick/James must have died in Ireland), Margaret b. 1859 in Antrim and Ellen b. 1863 in Antrim. They may have had more children but as they did not travel to Scotland with their Mother i haven't known how to find them. Jane was born in 1823 and was the Daughter of John Gribben & Mary McGhee, i have several siblings of Jane but believe there to be many more.

If any one could help me find the marriage ot Jane and Patrick/James i would be grateful!

Keelan
ps. could anyone give me any tips on researching Irish family before 1901? The further i go back on my Scottish line, the more i realise how much of it is actually Irish!

No he isn't. My Great Grandmother's sister knew of the father and his family, she was the one who told my nan the information after my Great Great Grandmother died. Near hopeless i know, but i have to try my hardest to find him.

I don't :/ I think all the information i have is what i have written down in these messages. Although he was from the Gallowgate and my nan was born in Polmadie in Govanhill, so he may have had a job that took him to that part of Lanarkshire, a Journeyman or Tramcar Driver. Who knows, i think this will take me a few years yet....bad times. But do you think it would be possible to find a Maude and William born to the same parents? Or possibly i could look for Maude in the Census' with the parents on the Birth Certificates to see if there is a brother William.

Unfortunately i don't know precisely when William and Maude were born. I have been led to believe by family though that it would be between 1880 and 1905 in Lanarkshire. Because there are only 16 Maude Smiths born throughout Lanarkshire in that time, and the family were from Lanarkshire, i believe one of these that i have seen is the sister to William.

Going on the parents names would it be possible to trace them further down the line to see any more children they had? I'm only guessing that William was married in Calton or Bridgeton as that is where he lived not long after he was married i think. It's very difficult i know, but this is a huge gap in my Tree on the Smith side. Its a shame my nan wasn't given more information, but it was kept very secret until it was safe to be told after some people had passed away.

Hello everyone! Well i have spoken to my nan and she said the Gallowgate was either Calton or Bridgeton

It was the registration district i was interested in as that is what is shown on ScotlandsPeople. The reason for this search is to find my Great Granddad William Smith (his is long dead now), who was married between 1918 and 1925 in that region and he definately lived in the Gallowgate between 1924 and 1926. He, shall we say, dabbled with a woman other than his wife and consequently she had one of my Grandparents. William had a sister Maude Smith.

Between 1882 and 1910 there were only 16 Maude Smiths (With varying names) born in Lanarkshire. Would anyone know if it is possible to find a William and Maude Smith born to the same parents? Maybe by going to the Parish Church in the registration District where they may have been born, or a records office?

Montgomeryshire / David Evans Trefeglwys
« on: Thursday 23 September 10 19:09 BST (UK)  »
Hello i'm looking for the parents and possible siblings of my 3x great Grandfather David Evans. Census' show he was born about 1818 in Trefeglwys. I think he married Mary Williams in 1843 in Machynlleth, and had a son David in 1843 in Trefeglwys. Mary Dies before 1861 and David then goes on to Marry Sarah Manuel in 1861 in Machynlleth and they have a son John, in 1862. I can't find David in 1841.

In 1851 David is at his place of work in Gwernafon, Occ. Waggoner. Mary & David are living in Trefeglwys, not far from David's place of work.

I can't think that David & Mary only had one son, possibly children who died in infancy before 1851 but i don't know a way to find this out. Would going to the Parish Church be the only way to find other possible children?

But mainly i am looking for the Parents & Siblings of David Evans 1818.

Thanks, Keelan

Inverness / Re: 9 Missing McKenzie's :(

Marcie - The census you found with John, Betty, Lisa and co. is definately the right census. I'm not sure as to the other McKenzie's living close by to them. I have no idea why the family suddenly moved from Inverness-shire to Argyllshire. It doesn't seem they had any family there that i can find at the moment - so some opportunity must have presented itself to them for them to pack up and migrate across country.

Annette - I too have found those records on ScotlandsPeople now. But the annoying thing is, i can't find Donald in the 1841 Census and i can't find him after the 1851 Census. Yet on the Death Certificate of his father John in 1857 he is Present. Yet in 1861 i can't find him or his Wife Mary. I am also having the same difficulty with Katherine and Hugh MacLean. Married in 1857 yet unable to find them in 1861 or to find them amongst all of the other MacLeans. Any tips?

I have now found Elizabeth McKenzie's Death in 1882. She is Elizabeth Kennedy nee McKenzie, Widow of Donald Kennedy. So either they kept up the pretence that they had married or they had a child and then married later in life. It is still very annoying that i can't find what happened to the other McKenzie's. See, the other son, Allan who was born in Coll in 1817. I can't find him in 1841, yet i can't find a Death for an Allan McKenzie in Coll between 1817 and 1841.

I have also found a Marriage for a Janet McKenzie and John McDonald in 1849, and them living in 1851 with a Daughter, Ann McDonald. Yet again though, no sign in 1861 or after. Very frustrating! Couldn't they, for my sake, have stayed put!!

Inverness / 9 Missing McKenzie's :(

Hello everyone,

I'm having a hard time researching the siblings of my Great Great Great Grandfather John McKenzie.

The Parents were John McKenzie and Elizabeth "Betty or Betsy" Sutherland. John and Betsy were Married 18 May 1805 in Canongate, Edinburgh.

Before 1815 the children were born in Inverness-shire - but after 1815 they were born mainly on the Isle of Coll, Argyllshire. The children are -

Margaret McKenzie. Birth - ? Name only appears on Mother betsy's Death in 1860.

I find it strange that i can't seem to narrow down enough clue's to find a specific sibling. I think i should also attatch this with the Argyll Boards but i dont know if i can do that? It maye be that they emmigrated abroad, but i havent been able to find any documentation of this.

In the 1841 Census John 60 & Betty McKenzie 55 are Living in High Street, Tiree & Coll. Also living there is Daughter Lisa (Elizabeth) McKenzie 25, Son John McKenzie 20, Daughter Janet McKenzie 15, Daughter Catherine McKenzie 13, Grandchildren - Catherine Kennedy 4 & Jane Kennedy 1. Boarders John McPhee 35 & Donald McLean 15. (I can't seem to find births of Catherine and Jane Kennedy to pinpoint who their parents would be).

In the 1851 Census John & Betsy McKenzie are living in the Village of Arinagour, Coll Isle. Also living there is Son John McKenzie and wife Anabella McKenzie, also Daughter Katherine McKenzie, Aged 21.

I know it is a lot of information to take in, and some of it might not make sense but im trying to find the marriages, deaths and children of the list of siblings at the top of the post. I would very much appreciate any help anyone has to offer!

Keelan
