Not sure of you got an answer but I think that Sarah Jane Gibson was the illegitimate daughter of Jane Ann Robinson who married Robert MacDonald in 1857.

I am also researching this family.

Anyone know how the grandchildren, George Miller O'Neal (b 1847) and Annas Donald (b 1860) fit into the family?

There is a baptism of George Miller O'Neill 4 Oct 1847 in Bowes to Jane O'Neill, no father listed. Is George an illegitimate son of one of Robert's sons? And who are Annas' parents?

Robert is the son of my 5xGreat-Grandfather.

Married at Whitchurch 12 Aug 1856: Thomas BICKLE aged 20, Bachelor, labourer, father William - a Blacksmith; Elizabeth WALTERS, of full age, spinster, father William WALTERS, a miner. Both of Whitchurch. A Mary WALTERS made her mark as a witness and a John SYMONS signed as a witness.

That was the marriage I identified as ours :)

The marriage to Jane would also be a possible as would the Stowford identification.

Thank you all for the help you have given. I now have a lot of work to do on this family :)

I will continue to try to find some report of Elizabeth's death. If it was at all unusual the papers would report it I think.

The Bickles I have found in local papers from Devon and Cornwall so far  have been less than reputable. Wonder of any of them are "ours"!

Wow, thank you so much. The "Squires" name does pop up elsewhere in my research although I wasn't certain enough to add it to the tree. I am guessing it was a maiden name somewhere along the line.

Poor Elizabeth, wonder what happened to her? I will find the local paper and see if there is a report of the inquest.

We live in Scotland but trip to the Devon / Cornwall border may be on the cards later in the year or next year. Only one Bickle uncle is still alive and in his 90s now, Thomas and Elizabeth's great-grandson. He has helped to identify a few people in photographs but knows very little about the family beyond his own parents. Even that is mostly hearsay and many stories can be disproven.

I guess she could be Elizabeth Jane - do Elizabeth and Jane have the same birthplace on census (to be the same woman)

Or do you have the marriage certificate from 1856?

I think I will have to buy the marriage certificate  ;)

Alternatively Jane may be Elizabeth and the census enumerator could have made an error. After all he has Beckle and not Bickle and has also omitted the county of birth.

Now I know why I put this family on a back burner..... I have found a William Thomas Bickle, grandson, on the 1861 census but he is with Richard and Eliza Ellis. Those names mean nothing to me - yet!!!!

It's possible that Eliza is the grandmother and it's her second marriage, or it could be a complete red herring.

This is the 1861 census
Gunnis Lake, Calcote

Thomas Bickle mar male 24 Quarryman Milton Abbot
Elizabeth wife  31 Milton Abbot
Richard son       4 Milton Abbot
Thomas son       2 Calstock

I am as certain as I can be that this is the correct family as it ties up with the 1881 census.
No sign of a son called William on this census (if the 1871 is correct) so I will have to look for him as he may be with grandparents.

That could be the correct family living at California Row, Seaton. Seaham. However the birthplaces of the children are all wrong and I am not sure who Jane is unless Elizabeth died and Jane is a second wife.

He is shown as deceased on his son Richard's marriage certificate (1880).

In 1881 Richard and his brother William are sharing a house with Richard's wife Hannah nee Oakman.

He was a miner when he was in Seaham, Durham, a deputy overman so quite high up in the organisation. His sons were born in Quither, Milton Abbot, and Gunnislake (just over the county line in Cornwall).

I need to recheck the census but I think it just says "Devon" so maybe he didn't know where he was born.

The 1871 death is the correct one.  ;)

Have you got the marriage certificate for Thomas & Elizabeth - what was occupation for William?
