Somerset / Re: Benjamin Cottle ca.1751 Marston Magna - parents?
« on: Friday 05 August 22 07:14 BST (UK)  »
Thank you for taking the time to look all of this up. Why is it always the sibling being researched who has missing records?! 😂
Given the size of Marston Magna, even today, it's a fairly safe bet that this all fits together.

Thanks again!

Somerset / Benjamin Cottle ca.1751 Marston Magna - parents?
« on: Thursday 04 August 22 22:56 BST (UK)  »
Dear all,

I have reached Benjamin Cottle of Marston Magna, who married Mary March/Marsh on 6th August 1773.

I have seen trees which list Benjamin Cottle (1718) and Edith Cunnock as Benjamin's parents, but they do not have any evidence linked to them.

Benjamin's death record has him as being born around 1751.

I would really appreciate a baptism record to tie loose ends together, or to link Benjamin to someone definite.

Many thanks.

The Common Room / Baptism before birth???
« on: Saturday 30 July 22 18:10 BST (UK)  »
I'm currently researching a friend's tree and have come across an illegitimate family.

A 'housekeeper' was living with the assumed father - certainly for the younger children - and later married him in 1888.

I am linking into a daughter, Ada, whose birth was registered in the December quarter of 1884 with the GRO, under her mother's surname of Varney.
This same lady appears in the 1939 register with a listed birth date of 17th September 1884.

However, there is also a baptism for her on 13th April 1884 - right name, right location, only mother listed on the baptism record.

Can anyone offer any explanation for this? She was born in a small village in Northamptonshire, and the names are not common ones.

Nottinghamshire / Re: Denys/Denis Harpham ca.1680 - Tuxford?

Hi Fred,

Thanks for your post. No connections yet, but I only made the link in the tree yesterday to Sarah Harpham, in the 1700s. If I discover anything, I'll let you know!

Nottinghamshire / Denys/Denis Harpham ca.1680 - Tuxford?
« on: Monday 25 July 22 23:20 BST (UK)  »
Dear all,

I am tracing a friend's family tree and have arrived back as far as 1699, with Benjamin Harpham baptised to Denys Harpham in Tuxford.  I believe this Benjamin to be the one who married Ann Cowper in Alfreton in 1723.

I am interested in finding more out about Denys Harpham.  He appears on trees as being born around 1680 and married to an Elizabeth Bristowe, but I have seen no records to back this up.  I believe he also had three further sons: Thomas 1702, William 1705 and David 1709.

Does anyone have access to any records relating to Denys?  I would be very interested in any further info on him.

Many thanks.

Derbyshire / Re: John Annable/Annabell 1831 - Belper - mother?

Thanks for the replies.  He is a pain, as his age jumps about quite a bit, so is hard to pin down.  Will keep trying to rule some of them out!

Thank you all for the replies - they are, really helpful! I'm not familiar with this part of the country at all, which adds to the difficulty.  ::)

« on: Saturday 23 July 22 20:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have a John Annable b.c. 1831 in Belper.  He married Mary Anne Harrison.

I am looking for his mother.  In 1851, the family group was as follows:

John Annabell, Head, Wid, 48, Joiner, Leek Nottinghamshire
John Annabell, Son, S, 20, Joiner, Belper Derbyshire
Richard Barks, Son in law, 28, Labourer, Ripley Derbyshire
Elizabeth Barks, Son in law's wife, 22, Belper Derbyshire
Hannah Annabell, Daughter, 19, Belper Derbyshire

HO107/2144 F737 P12

Can anyone find a baptism for John?
Perhaps a marriage for his parents?

Any help would be gratefully received!

Many thanks.

Hi Monica,

Thanks for taking the time to look for me. *If* this Thomas is mine, he's proving to be tricky. I do hope something will fall into place soon...I've been stuck on the Gibson line for years now, so I'm not expecting quick progress!
