I had the same problem I don't think you need to inform anyone just change your name as long as it is not for illegal purpose. My name change happened in 1901 census this caused me a lot of problems trying to find my family name beyond 1901 until I check my greatgrand mothers name for her marriage and found my surname should be different than it is.

Hi Caz,
The marriage cert gives both the bride and grooms parents thats why I suggested it that way you only have the expence of one certificate if you dont have it already.

Hi Amanda,
AS the other person said get the certificate but you only need one if it is their marriage as both your Grandfathers parents and Grandmothers parents are on that this gives you the info to search deeper.

Lanarkshire / Irish Harry and English Jimmy
« on: Friday 01 July 05 18:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,
Does anyone by any chance have any info on Irish Harry and English Jimmy. I have tried to find out about the two as when I was growing up they had been mentioned with whispered tones in the family. I believe Irish Harry is my great Gradfather Henry Devine I missed a TV program on STV in the 1960s by Bill Knox about them it used to be on around 5.20pm weekly he told tales of rougues and rascals in Scotland. I have tried STV but they could not find the footage of that eposide of the show. When I asked my father about them he said look it up in The Mitchell Libray  they are a matter of noterityI have tried this but I could search all the papers there and never find anything. I think they ran the gambling and drinking dens around parts of Glasgow westend in the late 1890s to 1920 approx.
Thanks in advance if anyone can help.

Lanarkshire / Re: The Gorbals, Glasgow (a place)

Hi All,
Do not forget the are lots of famous people came from Glasgow and the gorbals IE: Pinkerton Detective Agency in America was started by Pinkerton from the Gorbals. The place is like every where else if you live there it is better than somewhere else. I know I have stayed in worse places around the world so dont always believe what you read or hear.
The Gorbals was the main stopping place for the poor Irish people escaping the Famines.
