Shropshire / Garbetts of Dawley
« on: Friday 24 July 09 17:37 BST (UK)  »
I have recently discovered that my gr gr grandmother was Ann Wilson b 1845 in Dawley Shropshire. According to the IGI her parents were John Wilson and Mary Ann Garbett. Mary Ann was born 1816 in Dawley but there are 2 Mary Ann Garbetts born the same year so I don't know which are her parents. Does anyone have access to parish records in that area or know anything about the Garbetts of Dawley?

I am absolutely deligted to have found this connection to Shropshire as I was born and raised there but didn't originally think I had family history connected to the county as my parents both came from Staffordshire.

Hi

I've just come across this thread and I'm interested in the marriage between Oscar Andreas Enbom and  Edith Brinkworth on 29/9/1917.

I have an Edith Alice Brinkworth b 1880 in Leamington in my tree. I'm wondering if it could be the same woman. Does anyone know where this marriage took place?

Hi Dudley,

What are the baptism dates for your couple who married in 1839?

The earliest date I have in my family for a child baptised Catholic is 1824 when William's eldest child John was baptised at St Peter & St Paul RC church. Your couple would have been baptised before this. I'm wondering if something changed in the early 19th century Is it possible that they had to be baptised in the Anglican church for some reason? I haven't seen the Catholic records for Wolverhampton so it is just possible there were 2 William Rogers of that age and the other one was baptised Catholic, but I don't think so as everything else fits so well.

After 1824 none of my Rogers family were baptised in St Peter's although they all married there, including my
gr grandmother who married as late as 1874, and I know for certain she was Catholic as she lived until 1935 and my mother knew her. He husband almost certainly wasn't, though, so perhaps you are right about them both having to be.

I need to get to see the Catholic records. This is a puzzle.

I didn't even occurr to me that they may have married somewhere else.
It may even be the same Richard Rodgers marrying for a second time. There is no record at St Peter's of any children from the 1770 marriage so she could have died and he remarried.
I will have a dig around in Shropshire as well, though.

I hadn't thought of that. I just did a quick look on the IGI. I couldn't find any other couple of those names with children in Staffordshire but there are loads in Shropshire, and that makes sense because the Richard b 1751 came from a family originally from Shropshire.
Also 2 of William's sons married Shropshire girls and several other descendants have moved over there. I wanted to find a way of establishing this is my William's father because I have discovered he has a colourful history.  I guess there is no way I can know for sure, though.

Hi Jenny,

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. I know I mentioned the IGI but It was the online parish records on the Wolverhampton Archives site that I was talking about. Are these complete? or is there more information on the actual records.

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / St Peter's Wolverhampton parish records look up

Hi,
My 3xgr grandfather is William Rogers b 1795 Wolverhampton & baptized at St Peter's.
I know from the IGI that his parents were Richard & Sarah Rogers. The only baptism of a Richard Rogers on St Peter's records is in 1751 and there is a marriage of a Richard Rogers to a Sarah New in 1770.
What puzzles me is, why would a couple marry in 1770 but not have children until1794, the year of Williams eldest sibling's birth.
Is it possible that the online parish records of St Peter's records are incomplete?
I would be really grateful if someone could check the actual records to see if there is another Richard Rogers who married a Sarah at a later date or, alternatively, if there were other children born to the marriage I mentioned.

My other puzzle is that the Rogers family were Catholic. So why were they baptized in St Peter's which is Anglican? Or could I even have the wrong William Rogers? I don't think so as the dates match and the names of his 3 siblings are the ones he gave to his children. Does anyone know if Catholics sometimes got baptized in an Anglican church?

I would be really grateful for any help or suggestions.
