Oh ::) also forgot to mention that there used to be a Swinnertons second hand furniture shop in Summerhill (near wrexham) back in the 80's (1980's) may be the same one that used to be on Pen y Bryn but relocated.

Hi Brian

The Church or Chapel is called Capel Bedyddwyr or Pen y bryn Baptist Chapel. I think its for Welsh speakers. According to Genuki, there was also anon-conformist chapel called Pen y bryn - Salisbury Park. Chapel St. runs into Salisbury road but there isn't a Church or Chapel there now plus it was English speaking.

I'm not sure how long the present Welsh Chapel has been there but my g.g.g grandfather died in Chapel house, Chapel St. in 1885 and the street is called Chapel st so if its not that particular building i'm sure there must have been a previous one.

Hi there

As a native of Wrexham I would definately say its worth a visit. Its the finest place on earth cos thats where all my friends and family live, no point being in paradise on your own is it. Anyway thats my rant over and back to the subject.

Turtle st. is definately TUTTLE st. Its a small road that runs just below the Parish Church of St. Giles which used to house a couple of small breweries and is to the rear of a very old pub called The Nags Head (once painted by Turner)

Just off Pen Y Bryn is Chapel St. Funnily enough it has a surviving Chapel maybe if your ancestors were Welsh they could have attended.

Also there is a tiny hamlet called Pen y Bryn. If you drive straight up the hill through Penycae. There's not much there though just a couple of cottages.

If you didnt know about the breweries perhaps you didnt know that Wrexham was the first place in Britain to brew lager. (Another good reason to visit)

Hi

Does anyone know of the exact location of a house in Aintree called "The Bramptons"?

I think it may have been a large-ish house as it was being lived in by a Sea Captain named James Glasspoole and family circa 1870.

Hi Military Buffs

Does anyone know or can point me in the direction of finding out the answers myself........

My ancestor joined the British Army in 1830 (St. Helena Corps) and spent 5 1/2 years there. Why was he there, as Napoleon was dead and what would he have been doing?

He was then transferred to 55th reg of foot in 1836 (St. Hel. reg. disbanded) and spent 5 1/2 yrs in East Indies. Again why and if possible where?

He also spent 3 yrs in China (1st opium war) But i've managed to get info on that .

I also know he spent time at Winchester barracks and some time in Ireland.
He left the Army in 1853 to join the permanent staff of Royal Denbigh Rifles based in Wrexham, North Wales. Why that branch of the militia as he was from Essex? Did they advertise for recruits or would the Army have sent him?

His military record is full of other good stuff ie. found drunk on duty etc but I am trying to put together a timeline of his life.

Thanks
Elaine

Essex Lookup Requests / Re: Peldon parish records

Thanks again Clincher

If you happen to be able to look at Peldon records again....
Is there anything about Mary Sowell being 'of this parish' or from elsewhere or 'daughter of' etc. Or even of other Sowells on record.

I think the Henry marrying Mary Backwith may be the 1st Henry's father marrying again as the dates dont quite fit.

Any help appreciated

Hi
Thank you so much. The dates seem to fit as their 1st child was born about 1806/7

Thanks again
