South Africa / 1883 Shipwreck
« on: Tuesday 30 October 12 22:13 GMT (UK)  »
Can anybody give me any information about the sinking of the ship "Nebo" somewhere of the coast of Durban in 1883.  An ancestor, Charles MacNicol, born 1852, from Glasgow, Scotland was drowned when the ship sank on its maiden voyage.
Thank you.

Canada / St Lewis Suburbs, Quebec
« on: Tuesday 30 October 12 22:08 GMT (UK)  »
I have two letters written by ancestors from St Lewis Suburbs, Quebec and wonder if anyone can tell me exactly where this is.
The first letter is from Mrs Mary Martin nee MacDonald and is dated 5th March 1860 and the address is Blakelock Street, St Lewis Suburbs.
The second letter is from Mary's grand daughter Marion Ferguson and is dated 25th November 1889 and the address is 26 St Michael Street.
Mary Martin was born in either Ardgour or Fort William, Scotland in 1821 and was the daughter of Charles MacDonald and his wife Ann Boyd. She was married to a soldier named John Martin, and had at least three daughters, Charlotte, Lizzie and Ann.
Any help would be much appreciated.

My great great grandfather Hugh Sinclair (c1844 - 1872) was from Islay and his father Colin Sinclair was a handloom weaver. However, Colin Sinclair was born In Glassary  about 1794 and seems to have gone to live on Islay.

Thanks for the info on James Stoddart.
I made contact earlier this year with the descendants of his brother Simon who live in Australia, also other relatives in Fort Augustus.

Mary Kennedy who died at Fort Augustus in 1896, was the daughter of Archibald Kennedy and his wife Carherine MacDonell. She was the grand daughter of Ewen Kennedy and his wife Mary Cameron of Balmaglaster, Invergarry.
Mary Kennedy's husband, William Stoddart, who died at Fort Augustus in 1913, was the son of James Stoddart and his wife Jessie Fraser.
I would love to hear more about James Stoddart, son of William and Mary!!

Cornwall / Miss G MACCOLL, Porthleven, Helston

I have an old photgraph of St Mary's Scottish Episcopal Church in Glencoe, Argyllshire, just after it was built in 1880. On the back of the photo is written "From Miss G MacColl c/o Rev E. Gotto (?) Porthleven Vicarage, Helston, Cornwall".
I have been trying for some years now to discover who Miss MacColl was. Does anybody remember having seen a gravestone for her or any other mention of her in that parish in Cornwall?
I have Glencoe MacColls among my ancestors and would dearly love to know if this lady was related.

Argyllshire / Re: McINTYRE family in Glencoe (Duror/Appin/Lismore parish)

Many of the population in Glencoe and Ballachulish were Episcopalian and that is why you will not find them on the IGI.
The Episcopal records for St John's at Ballachulish only begin in 1810 and there are very few entries exist between 1815 and 1840.
There are the Confirmation lists from Bishop Forbes' visit to the area in 1770 which you could look at - they might help- they are the earliest Episcopalian records for the area.
