Westmorland / Hugh HUGILL marriage ca 1675 and death ca 1707
« on: Thursday 01 January 15 15:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
I hope someone can help me.  I have a Hugh Hugill of Barnskew, Reagill in parish of Crosby Ravensworth, born probably 1652, having children between 1676 and 1695 and I think dying between 1702 and 1709.  He was a maltster and had property in Appleby and possibly elsewhere.  I've quite a few references to him.
I think he was married to Margaret and there is a Boyd's index to a marriage in Brough under Stainmore in 1675. Does anyone have access to the records to this parish?  I also do not have his or his wife's burial which I would also like to find.
regards
Deborah

Westmorland / Re: Cannot find an Ellwood marriage

Hi Gillian
I can't remember where this John Ellwood lived so don't know whether either of these are relevant (and he would have been a little on the young side) but just in case:

25 Mar 1826 Westmorland Gazette
At Bolton, near Appleby on Thursday last, John Elwood of Crackenthorpe to Miss Bate of Bolton.

16 Sep 1826 Westmorland Gazette
On Sunday last, Mr John Ellwood of Spittal to Miss Agnes Hoggarth of Aykrigg End.

19 Dec 1840 Kendal Mercury
At Kirkby Stephen, on the 16th inst, Mr John Ellwood to Miss Margaret Richardson both of Soulby.

24 Mar 1849 Kendal Mercury
On the 16th inst at Knock near Appleby, Mr John Ellwood, yeoman, aged 41 much respected.

Hi
I haven't found the marriage, sorry.  I just wanted to check that you had seen the newspaper articles for George's death and possibly daughter Mary's death.  I think these are probably your sources?

A marriage licence was issued on 01 April 1777:

Betty Wilkinson, Whale Moor, parish Lowther, age 20
bondsmen:
Edmund Langhorn, parish Bampton, yeoman
Richard Langhorn, ditto, yeoman
EL is Anthony's father and consents
Marriage to take place at Lowther

That's a pretty amazing entry!

Judy
Leeds Times 12 Dec 1835
... On Tuesday last..
Same day at his residence near London, Mr John Richardson, youngest brother to Mr Richardson solicitor of this town.  Same day Arabella the infant daughter of Mr John Richardson.

(I know that Septimus should be the youngest brother but sometimes the newspapers/informants made mistakes.  Septimus died on 11 May 1838?)

Arabella is such an easy name to check for that I thought I'd offer it up as a possibility.

Westmorland / DofC Marriage licences for Kendals in 1770s
« on: Thursday 05 June 14 08:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi Judy
I'm a bit late to this thread and I haven't followed all the nuances, but:

Dec 19 1774
Thomas Kendall of Hesloe, Morland, yeoman
Mary Fothergill of Morland, a minor
bond: Thomas Fothergill of Morland, yeoman (who is her father and consents)

05 Jun 1772
John Kendal of Little Strickland, Morland, slater
Grace Chamley, Carlisle
bond: Edmund Kendal of Lowther, yeoman
marriage to take place at Morland

29 Jul 1775
Robert Smith, Morland, husbandman
Eliz Kendal, ditto
bond: Thos Holme, Crosby Ravensworth, blacksmith
marriage to take place at Morland

06 Jan 1776
John Kendall, Newbyend Morland, woodmonger
Ann Smith, ditto
bond: John Kendall, Morland, yeoman
marriage to take place at Morland

07 Sep 1776: John Kendall, Morland, husbandman was bondsman to a Smith/Fallowfield marriage

I think some of these fit in somewhere with the lines you are researching

Antrim / Re: John McCOY s of Robert birth in ?Ballinderry
« on: Tuesday 18 March 14 16:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Trish
I just found this entry in the Belfast Morning News for 1880

HIGGINSON-McCOY - March 21 in Moira Wesleyan Chapel by the Rev C M'Kay.  Robt. H. Higginson only son of Hammond Higginson of Ballmaghan, Magherafelt, County Londonderry to Mary youngest daughter of the late John McCoy Gortrany, Ballinderry, Co Antrim

so this strongly supports the idea that the name Mary was reused for a younger sibling (which seems to be the only explanation which fits all the facts anyway).

Deborah
