Hi Allan

Thank you so much for your reply.  I am excited now!  This could be the reason I cannot find a death or marriage for her in UK.  She was definately born in Edinburgh as I have her birth certificate, but was brought up/adopted by my GGG grandparents David and Mary Russell.  If she is not listed in the 1911 census, which will hopefully be available very soon, then you could be correct in your thinking.  By the way I am in Midlothian so not so very far from you.  I would be interested in knowing where your wife fits into the family.  I am descended from David and Mary Russells son John who married Catherine Aitken.
Best regards
Irene

I have Mary Bethune McLeod Russell listed on the 1881 census as being the adopted daughter of David Russell in Muiravonside.  I know she registered the death of her mother, Mary Russell nee Graham, in Dunfermline in 1900 but can find no trace of her after that.   Anyone have her in their family tree?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Monica

I know, now you can see why I am up against it!

Sorry it should have said 51 1/2 Adelphi St for the fathers address. That's what the birth certificate says.  If the father is the Thomas Young I am thinking was born in USA then he was only 17 when baby was born. My brain has been frazzled with this for years.  Sometimes I think I have simply just gone off on the wrong line somewhere but I always come back to the same conclusion.

Hi All

Thank you all for your correspondence.

Monica, the birth address for Thomas Young was 41 Adelphi St, Gorbals, Glasgow. The address of his father (Thomas) is 51 Adelphi St.

Hi Monica

Thanks for all your suggestions.  The poor relief records sounds like a good idea.   I was telling my husband what you suggested he recalled his uncle telling him that he remembers that some child in the family was put in an orphanage whilst his parents went to USA.  They intended (or not) to send for the child once they were settled!?  It just gets worse!!
Maybe I will never get to the bottom of this but I do appreciate all your help and suggestions.

Hi Monica

Great to receive a reply to my query.  I was interested to read you had found an entry in 1901 census for a 9 year old Thomas McMahon.  I can''t find that entry.  Do you know the name of the family he was residing with in East Kilbride?

I am pretty sure Thomas Young and Margaret McMahon never married.

On Thomas Born 1892 marrage certificate his parents (Thomas Mcmahon and Janet Young!?!) were stated as deceased.

Older great uncles in the family have always said that Grandad Thomas McMahon (as we knew him) wasn't always a McMahon, he was a Young!?  I think this is where all the confusion comes in, I need to stop listening to bits and pieces of stories and get on with finding my man!!

Thanks for your reply.  Any other suggestions really would help.

Regards

Irene

Hi
I am trying to find information on  Thomas Young who was born in Pennsylvania around 1874 but moved to Scotland before he was 7.  He was living with his parents John/James and Jane in Adelphi St in Gorbals, Glasgow in 1891 and in Edinburgh in 1881.  I don't know if they were his natural parents as they were both Scottish (did they go to USA then return?) or was he adopted by them, I don't know.

Thomas went on to have a son also called Thomas Young, born in 1892.  His birth certificate states he was illigitimate but fathers name was given as Thomas Young and mother Margaret McMahon.  In later years he took the name McMahon as his surname.

The plot thickens when Tom (born 1892) gets married in 1918 and parents are given as Thomas McMahon and Janet Young.

I am very confused, any help from all you expert genealogistswould be greatly appreciated!
