Donegal / Re: William Carolan: Donegal 1825

you are not Dense, I am used to that sit.  also if you type in that box - Slaters 1846 Directory

Carolan, Carlin and Cockburn or mentioned.

Thank you once again Rathmore - I followed your directions, found the box and the mention of Carolan in the Kiteevoge area :)

Now I'll try the Slaters directory, but I'm beginning to think that there are far too many Carolans without a bit more information.  If only I could find his death certificate it might give me a few more clues, but I can't even find that :(  Though I know he died in Scotland.

Hi Andy

I haven't done any family history research for some time, but on tidying up my filing I came across your post to me dated 9th November 2014.  I just wondered if you had got any further with tracing William Carolan in Ireland.  As I may have told you, I went to Donegal to a Family History Centre, but they could find no trace of him.

Hope you had more luck.

Thanks Nova67.  I just Googled and read the pages in the book.  So now the mystery is solved.

My thanks to everyone.

Thanks for all your replies and comments.  The Scotlands People reference I have is: (Census 1851 685/01073/01015).

It does appear that carpet shoes are different to slippers, although in what way I don't know.  Perhaps someone else has a comment to make on this.

In the 1851 census the occupation of my William Carolan, born in Ireland in 1825, has been transcribed as "carpeted shoemaker", but I can't actually read the word, so don't know if it is correct.  Has anyone heard of the word "carpeted" and knows what it may mean?

Thanks.

Hi Krezzy

Thanks for replying to my post.  I had subsequently found the 1941 census, but thanks all the same.  Charles Morris was my husband's 2nd great grandfather.

Do you go any further back?  I have found Mary's parents, Thomas George and Margaret Leather, but know nothing about Charles's parents.

Best wishes

That's brilliant.  Thank you both.

Thanks for the suggestion Past Master, but it is too bad for that.  I also tried enhancing it, but that didn't work either.

Thanks anyway.

I am looking for William Carpenter, christened 1819, Islington, Middlesex.  I have found the following census record on findmypast, but it is illegible (free).  The reference is HO107 676 1/25 43 address Henrietta Place, St Marylebone, Marylebone, Middlesex.

Could anyone find a readable copy and give me the details.  Also is there a John Joseph Carpenter on the same page anywhere?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
