Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: New ethnicity splits on Ancestry
« on: Tuesday 15 September 20 09:05 BST (UK)  »
Ouch Aye, I’m now 12% Scottish and my wife 27% - neither obvious. Couldn’t Ancestry have identified the tartan which goes with it? Clearly the next step!
My Irish (which I could explain)has gone from 5% to 3% to 0% while my German has gone from 0% to 11% to 15%. They’re taking us over after all!
My wife’s German (again which I could explain) has gone from 5% to 2% Norwegian to 2% Swedish. (I ‘m looking forward to the Inuit percentage next time ...)
To be fair they have singled out meaningful significant regions for both of us.

The science of ethnicity is matched only by the science of lockdown.

PPS  - The GRO index also reveals that the maiden name of Morris Samuel Phillips' mother was Nevill which means that Samuel's wife was Sarah Nevill. Precious little info on the Pentlschmid name!

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Question about Ancestry DNA Ethnicity
« on: Thursday 14 May 20 08:34 BST (UK)  »
In my experience Ancestry ethnicity does point to some significant origins and migrations which accord with the paper trail. However, it can appear to get the detail wrong. Before the last recalculation of ethnicity my wife was showing 5% German. I was happy I could explain this as her 2x great grandmother was Louisa Kirchner - from Ireland but of German descent. However with the recalculation she has 0%German and 2% Norwegian. I have now just located a 5th-8th cousin match of mainly German descent  who shows no common ethnicity. I think this proves you have to allow for a margin f error! The other thing to bear in mind is that an ancestor’s genes may get filtered out over the generations and not appear in your dna at all.

Phil

I must admit that I was a bit bemused when my ancestry matches initially didn’t throw up anyone with my surname or even with my surname in their family tree. This was compounded by the fact that I had no one amongst my matches with my male line 2 x great grandmother’s Langdale surname and only one instance of it occurring in a match’s tree. (One of the reasons for doing the test was to try and break down brick walls in my Goater and Langdale ancestry!)
Suspicion fell on my male line great grandmother through whom I had several established matches. After a year or so I was delighted to see someone with the distinctive name of Lipop show up as a match as the records show that my 3x great aunt Mary Goater married Lorenzo Lipop. I also now have a distant match with someone who actually has some Goaters on their tree and the name Langdale has shown up in another match’s tree. The jury however is still out!

My wife has just explained some of the changes! She pointed out that ancestry is American and they had clearly thought that Norway was Sweden ..... :)

Donner und Blitzen! I've gained 11% Northern Germany having had no previous indication! I have got two separate ancestral lines with the name Henning which I had assumed came from an English village but am now suspecting originated in Germany. My wife has lost her 2%German and 2% Swedish and gained 2%Norway instead. With a Kirchner in her ancestry I thought I could explain the German bit too!
Whatever next?
A bemused Phil.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: new beta on ancestry dna results
« on: Sunday 03 March 19 18:52 GMT (UK)  »
Initially I was impressed as Thrulines appeared to break down a brick wall but having played with it for a bit I’m not so sure. I found that they’d established a DNA distant cousin through my step great grandmother’s line. This didn’t compare to the number of matches through my great grandad’s first wife and somehow I doubt the veracity of their find. It’s also suggested, without any DNA back up, an identity for a 4x great grandfather which I’m confident is a spurious connection on somebody else’s tree. Not as helpful as I first thought and to be treated with caution! It does however suggest lines of enquiry.

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Re: Henning baptisms - is father a serjeant in 51st Foot?
« on: Wednesday 19 September 18 20:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi Irene,
Sorry I can’t help you with your enquiry. I have two (at present) separate roots involving Hennings in Hampshire with William Henning b. Fordingbridge 1798 profession waiter and Henry Henning b. Lymington 1757 profession clock and watchmaker (father Francis) as far as I’ve got. William’s son William was a butcher. Their were a lot of Hennings in Hampshire and it would be interesting to know a common root. A DNA connection might prove a connection to either or both of my Henning roots!
All the best with your enquiry!
