Many thanks Mo and Cati.  I am beginning to think I will never find his death!! He seems to have disappeared after 1901 census. ::)

World War One / Help needed for age at death on CWGC record please

I have found this record for W Woodruff in 1916 at Malta Cemetery. I am hoping he is my gt uncle.

Can anyone tell me how I could find out his age please as other searches have not found his death. Some marriages for his children say that he is deceased by 1919.

William was born in Gibraltar to a serving soldier in the Buffs in 1864. By 1901 he was a Stoker and out of the army himself. This record is for a Stoker.

Recorded as Deceased on son's marriage certificate in 1919.    Is this his death?  WOODRUFF, W  Rank:Stoker  Service No:6081/S  Date of Death:09/12/1916  Regiment/Service:Royal Naval Reserve   H.M.S. "Vengeance"   Grave ReferenceProt. 333.  CemeteryMALTA

No, me neither!!

Another anomaly. 1861 census says he is brother in law to George Sears but can't make them fit either even to Lucy wife of George. A lot of name changing with this lot I fear. Matilda could be named anything at birth, that is if she was registered. ::)

Yes, they definitely changed name to Stapleton. In 1881 they are living next door to Matilda and her husband and family. Edward now a Colliery worker. What a puzzle this has been.

Many thanks to you all.

Kind regards,
Margaret

Yes, I am struggling to find parents with name of Shreeve after 1861! But the name of Stapleton does appear. I had noticed a criminal record for an Edward Shreeves but it was before they got married. I wonder if he had been naughty again and they decided to change their name. I can't find a birth record for Matilda either.

Thank you all  very much for your thoughts.

If her parents had married in 1857 can we assume that she was born out of wedlock before they married? Or is Shreeves not her father at all? I presume that is why she was Stapleton on mariage rather than Shreeves. That would make sense to me!!

Hi,

On 1881 census Matilda is living with her husband John William Redmile and children in Shefton Yorkshire. She states that she was born in Clifton Bedfordshire. I have found a marriage for them in Worksop Notts in 1876. Unfortunately I cannot find her before her marriage. Any help would be most welcome.

1881 cenus

Household Members: Name Age
John Redmile 25
Matilda Redmile 25
Alfred Redmile 4
Alice Redmile 2

I think I have linked him now. His mother was Eliza Nailor who married William Cowham and then William Tall.

Many thanks for your help.

Margaret

I can't see all of the census you mention on familysearch but thanks for giving me that. The Findagrave for William is one of my family. I was hoping that Robert belonged to them. :)
