Hello Lisa, Richard Henry Jones' death notice is archived in the Pretoria Archives.  He died in 1909 and his surviving spouse is named as Annie Jones.

A copy of his death notice can be ordered from The Genealogical Society of South Africa - http://www.eggsa.org/sales/eshop_e_dc_docs.htm

Hello John,

The information I have received which still has to be verified is Richard Lewis (Snr) was born 10 March 1794, Talbenny Wales and was baptised 6 April 1794 at St. Mary's the Virgin, Talbenny, Wales.

I have also been told (but have not yet verified)  Richard had an older brother named John who was baptised 10 July 1791 at St. Mary's the Virgin, Talbenny, Wales.

What is your interest in the family?

Kind regards,

Pat

Hello Helen,

This is a follow up to my previous message.  Richard Moyle's occupation at the time of his marriage is noted as "Mariner".  I have come across a transcription of a passenger list from the Shipping & Merchantile Gazette for January 1847 which reads " Shipping & Mercantile Gazette 1847/01/??
    Gilbert Henderson,
    Plymouth to Cape Town
Mr and Mrs BERNARD and family; Rev Mr and Mrs NOLLAR; Dr S??; Capt. And
Mrs MOYLE, Mr TWEEDIE, Messrs ??  McLEOD, FULLER DANSEY, and 209 woman
and children, Emigrants.

If Richard Moyle was indeed a navy captain, you may be able to track records relating to his career in the UK.

Kind regards,

Pat

Hello Helen,

Richard Moyle (Snr) appears to have been at St. Saviour's Church in Claremont in the Cape from as early as 1854 as his name appears in the church baptism records from that time.  He was parish clerk and sexton and schoolmaster at the church in the 1860’s.  Someone at the church may be able to provide you with more information about his time there.  The website for the church is http://www.goodshepherd-protea.org.za/st-saviours-church.php

It appears Richard (Snr) did not leave Cape Town as there is a death notice for a Richard Moyle (died 1888) in the Cape Archives.

Kind regards,

Pat
