US Completed Requests / Mining Deaths in Pennsylvania and ships passenger lists
« on: Wednesday 18 August 04 08:33 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have any idea how we could find the death of my Great  Great Grandmother's first husband when all we know is that he was killed in a Pennsylvania mine prior to 1876 and after 1868 and that they were originally from South Wales, his wife's name was Elizabeth Thomas born 1848 and her son's name was Daniel born 1871.  Also does anyone know of any free ship's passenger listings that we can search please?

Thanks for that Patches - I think that will have to be my course of action as nothing else seems to be working - we have searched and searched the internet to no avail.  Its nice to know that there is someone else who needed and found similar information - cheers!

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Penbryn Cardiganshire - Davies - 1871
« on: Thursday 12 August 04 08:36 BST (UK)  »
If anyone has the 1871 and or  earlier census for the Penbryn parish Cardiganshire - I would like to know who was living at the following premises with my GGG Grandfather Enoch Davies.

Ffynondudur (possibly Ffynondydir or Ffynonfudir - I have seen it spelt all three ways), Llaen Road,  Rhyd Lewis, Llandysil (again there are several spellings for this town name), Cardiganshire/Ceredigion.

This is a longstanding mystery in our family as we do not know the names of the other members of his and we are trying hard to solve it.

Many thanks I hope someone can help as we are going stir crazy surfing the web trying to find out information!!!

Since writing the above I have found out some other information.  An older Enoch Davies (born 1797) was living at Ffynondydir (Ffynondudur) on the 1881 cencus with his Grand daughter Esther (born 1849).  These two are also found on the Glynarthen Chapel membership records of 1875 - 1881.  We do not know where the Margaret Davies went from the earlier 1872/3 chapel records - and now are unsure as to whether the Enoch Davies in the earlier chapel records was the older one or my GG Grandfather - the mystery deepens!  Also - there is no reference to any of them being members in the 1874 records of the chapel.

Any help would be gratefully received.  Does anyone have a 1871 or earlier census of the area - their parish was Penbryn in Cardiganshire.

The Common Room / Re: Prison records and children's homes

Thanks for the info Jaq - He was from the Herefordshire area (Living in Ewyas Harold).  I know he was pc33  and that he resigned in June 1908 but thats about it.  Where can I get the criminal indexes for that area?  I am new to all this and so am still learning.  We had thought about going to the local Hereford newspaper to look through the microfiche for 1908/09.

Thanks again

The Common Room / Prison records and children's homes
« on: Monday 09 August 04 19:03 BST (UK)  »
1. Does anyone have any idea how to find out where someone was imprisoned in the early 1900s and for what?  We believe that my Great Grandfather, Henry Barber was imprisoned (possibly for manslaughter) for a period of about 2 years in or around 1908.  We know that in June 1908 he resigned from the police force but we do not know under what circumstances.   Any tips or suggestions please?

2. I am aware that my grandmother (Frances Catherine Barber) and her siblings were placed in a childrens home about November 1908 - she was living in Ewyas Harold, Herefordshire, at the time.  Does anyone know how to go about finding out where they would have been placed?

US Completed Requests / Elizabeth Thomas - Liverpool to Pennsylvania
« on: Monday 09 August 04 18:21 BST (UK)  »
We are looking for information on my GG Grandmother - Elizabeth Thomas (born   1848)  who sailed to Pennsylvania from (we think) Liverpool sometime between 1868 and 1878 with her husband (name unknown), son Daniel and possibly another son John.  We know that her husband was killed in the mines out there and she came back to Britain. We would appreciate any help you may be able to give on how we could find out more about this.
