Occupation Interests / Re: Firemen (Firefighters)
« on: Tuesday 13 October 09 13:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
There is a book about Beckenham during WW2  --
"Beckenham The Home Front 1939-45" by Pat Manning & Cliff Watkins. It contains a chapter on the AFS including a photograph of the serving firemen marching beside their fire engines in the funeral procession for the 19 Beckenham AFS killed on the night of 19-20 April 1941 at the Old Palace School Poplar.

My uncle Dave Chalmers had been killed 3 nights earlier, on 17 April 1941, two other AFS firefighters were also killed at the same time and another was morally wounded when a bomb hit the house where they were fighting a blaze in Wickham Road, Beckenham.

Suffolk Lookup Requests / Baptism: for Hannah ROOT b1795-96 in Ipswich, Suffolk
« on: Saturday 12 September 09 11:19 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me please?

I am searching for the birth or baptism record of my 3x gt grandmother Hannah ROOT b1795-96.  Hannah gave Ipswich Suffolk as her place of birth in the 1861/71 census's (age 75 in 1871).

Hannah ROOT married William Hast Westhorp at St Nicholas Harwich, Essex in 1819 (both signed) - one of the witnesses to this marriage was Edward Root who made his mark X.

I'd be most grateful for any help or advise.

Thank you
Chris

Hi Valda,

Thank you so much for all this valuable information.

Have checked some of it out and it most certainly is giving me some clues to
what my g g g grandfather's link with Trinity Services might have been.
Unfortunately all the records for the 19th century appear to have been
destroyed in the Blitz c1940. However, "Wardens' notes" might be some help?

Many thanks once again
Chris

Hi

Could anyone help me please? I am trying to find out what "Trinity Service" Seamen were and maybe what the company they worked for was.

My 3x gt grandfather was William Hast Westhorp (b1796).
In the 1861 census returns he is recorded as "Master" of the vessel Hercules - wife Hannah and daughter in law Susan were onboard along with granddaughter Emily.
The Westhorp family home was in Poplar.  On his wife Hannah's death certificate (1873) she is recorded as Wife of "Trinity Service Seaman". This information was given by their son William Hast Westhorp (b1822).

In 1861 census son William Hast Westhorp jnr (b1822) was recorded working on "Trinity Service Barge" and in 1861 census was Engineer onboard the vessel Goliath off Erith, Kent - so I guess he knew the facts when her reported his mothers death in 1873, by this time he was a Manager of an Oakum Factory in Bromley St Leonard, E London so it's unlikely there was a mix-up with occupations given on the d/c.

I'd be most grateful for any help or advise
Thank you
Chris

Hi again Jebber,

Oh my goodness what a result!! I can't believe how much information you've found for me today. Absolutely brilliant stuff - I am so grateful to you.

I can now correct my tree re Hannah Root. I had the wrong Hannah (re guess work!!).
This new information has now given me a whole new family to research.

Many thanks to you for everything
Best wishes
Chris

Hi Jebber,

You're a Gem!! This is brilliant news. Thank you so much for this and all the extra information.

I'm also searching for William Hast Westhorp's marriage to Hannah. Hannah was born in Suffolk (possibly Ipswich) so I'm not sure where the marriage took place. Their first surviving child, Hannah, was born abt 1820 in Harwich - two other children were born in Harwich before the family moved to Poplar E London - so I still have quite a lot of searches to do yet.

Could you tell me where you got your Microfiche records from please, as you can probably see, ordering Microfiche from Essex Archives is a bit like pulling teeth - they don't seem to have reached the 21st century yet.

Many thanks once again.
Chris

Hi Jebber,

Bless you. Thank you so much for this information. This is the proof I needed to be sure my instincts were right - only the later children of Nathanial Westhorp and Elizabeth are available in LDS IGI.

Could I ask another big favour please?

A member of Ancestry has Nathanial Westhorp married to Elizabeth Hast in their Family Tree, the marriage apparently took place in St Nicholas, Harwich (3 March 1791). Is it at all possible for you to confirm this for me please?

Many thanks
Chris

Hi Findem,

Many thanks for this information. I'm not sure what ERO stands for? could you let me know please.

I tried "Essex Regional Office" in Google but no luck there.

All the best
Chris

Hi Mudlark,

You can also email the ERO, there is an email address somewhere on the ERO site but if you can't find it let me know and I'll send it to you via PM.  If you give details of what you want to cover they will send a list and an order form by email but you have to send it back by post because a signature is required.

If the PRs are on micro film you will probably find that you are out of luck, last time I checked the ERO can only sell copies of micro fiche, still it's worth a try.

Regards.
