Lancashire / Re: Help finding a father’s name.

I have. And I’ve found one who looked likely, and ordered her birth certificate. It could be my Alice Ann, and probably is, but how can I be sure?

Lancashire / Help finding a father’s name.
« on: Wednesday 03 June 20 19:29 BST (UK)  »
My grandfather, Patrick Flynn, was born 23 August 1892 in Liverpool. On his birth certificate his father is Andrew Flynn, his mother Alice Ann née Taylor. There were at least 5 other children born to Andrew and Alice Ann—Andrew 1888, Joseph 1890, Peter 1895, John 1896, and Michael 1901—all with the same mother’s maiden name on their birth certificates. I’ve found RC christening records for some of the boys.
But, I’ve been unable to find a marriage between Andrew and Alice Ann, though I’ve searched a number of sites, and even searched just using first names. I’m beginning to think the couple never married. (In the 1881 census Andrew was “married” to a woman named Sarah who was born in Scotland. I’ve been unable to find a record of this marriage also.)
Without a marriage, how can I find out Alice Ann’s father’s name? According to the censuses (1891 and 1901) she was born about 1864 in Liverpool.
Thanks!

Westmorland / Thomas Shaw & Rosamund Hudderston--Married Heversham
« on: Sunday 24 February 19 12:10 GMT (UK)  »
I think my Agnes Shaw, married William Dent 10 May 1779, in Preston Patrick was probably baptised 21 April 1751 in Preston Patrick. If so, she was the daughter of Thomas Shaw and Rosamund Hudderston, married 12 November 1747 Heversham. But, I can't find any information about Rosamund Hudderston--or even the surname Hudderston. Does anyone know anything about this surname, or possible variants?
Thanks!

The Common Room / Re: Is this my William Wilson?
« on: Thursday 01 June 17 00:27 BST (UK)  »
Oh dear.

I have found a William Wilson in the Newington Workhouse 7 July 1869, with his mother Jane, and brother Thomas, who was born abt 1856.

There are at least 3 William Wilsons who could be mine:
1866  J Quarter in ST GEORGE SOUTHWARK  Volume 01D  Page 117--Maiden name: Gardener
1866  J Quarter in SAINT GEORGE HANOVER SQUARE  Volume 01A  Page 280--Maiden name: Blundell
1866  S Quarter in MARYLEBONE  Volume 01A  Page 446--no Maiden name

On his marriage cert William claims to be the son of a William Wilson, Blacksmith.  I suspect this might not be true.  And I haven't found a marriage between a William Wilson and a Gardener or Blundell.

William Wilson is age 13 in 1881, on the Training Ship Exmouth, born St. Saviour. The address given is Grays, Thurrock, Essex.

Thanks Jon.  I don't know very much about work houses, and which work house a person would be admitted to.  If William was born in St Marylebone in 1866 would he end up in Newington Southwark?

(If William is indeed the son of Jane Wilson (born 1833) it looks as if she was in St Marylebone Infirmary to give birth.)

Thanks ShaunJ.  I have seen his TS Exmouth records and his Naval records.  So it's possible he altered his birth date, so he was 2 months older, in order to join the Navy?

I'm researching William Wilson, born 1866, St Saviour, Surrey. (His naval records show that he was born 29 August 1866 St Saviour.).

BUT: I’ve found a William Wilson born 29 June 1866 St Marylebone Workhouse.  He was baptized 12 July 1866; his mother’s name was Jane; there’s no father’s name given.

Could this be my William Wilson?  If so, why is his birth 2 months off on his naval records?  And if he was born in St Marylebone, why would he give his place of birth as St Saviour?  (In 1881 he was a pauper on the Training Ship Exmouth.)
