Wiltshire Completed Lookup Requests / Austin JARVIS - lookup 1841 please - COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 15 February 06 22:45 GMT (UK)  »
Dear 'Chatters'

Please can anyone locate Austin JARVIS for me? He was born in 1828. All I know about him is that he was born in the village of Monkton Farleigh and, as an adult, would become a farrier and smith, so perhaps his father may have carried on a similar trade. I would be most grateful for relevant details. I wouldn't normally ask for an unindexed 1841 look-up but I am assuming that Monkton Farleigh was not a large village : )

Thank you
Regards, Karen

Hi

Have just downloaded and run the Firefox browser. Ooh, it' fast isn't it?! Also, I have just accessed the LDS site, done a search and gone 'back' successfully to the search page as I originally queried so I'm impressed. Now to try out all the others bookmarks and see how it behaves. What a nice change from IE though so thanks for the tip one and all. I'm happy.

Cheers, Karen

Hi

Thanks everyone for your responses. It seems that more than one person suggests using Firefox, with which I'm not currently acquainted but will find out more. Some folk blame the virus checker and others the browser so I guess it's a trade-off. I will try Firefox and run it alongside until I'm sure it's superior then I may dump IE. Thank you again for your combined knowledge and experience  :)

Hi Falkyrn and Hi Bob

Thanks for both your messages. Firstly, I checked the 'do not save encrypted files' - actually on my system it said 'do not save encrypted pages to disk' - I hope that's the same thing. It was not selected anyway so I guess that's not the problem. As for shift and select - that was useful, I didn't know that. At least now I can return to the list of names, if not the original form where I entered the details.

I think that, with help from other correspondants, I have narrowed the problem down to being a certain incompatibilty between IE and Norton - I am not alone. If I completely turn off Internet Security I don't have a problem at all - other than letting in every Trojan virus known to man. I may never solve it so will limp along. Your help was much appreciated !

Cheers, Karen

Hi

Thanks for the quick reply. Two points though: firstly, my computer at work doesn't do this and I can flip happily back and forwards on the LDS site - not, if my boss is reading this, that I do my family history stuff at work  ;D

Secondly, where is the 'return to results' that you mentioned - I've looked all over the page and can't see it. Also, if you open a new page whilst in LDS it loads to the search page by default. So, unfortunately, I'm still no further forward with this one. Thanks though.

Regards, Karen

Hi Listers

I am hoping others out there use the LDS Family Search site. I try! Since arming myself to the hilt with Norton Security I am protected behind a huge firewall and nothing bad can get in. In fact, if I select the Personal Firewall option I can't even access the internet at all - how protected  is that?!!

Unfortunately, a knock-on effect of all this super security is that the LDS site responds thus...

I put in a set of search terms, names, dates, locations, parents etc etc.
I hit 'search' and the list of names comes up. I select one of the names and look at the pages. I can hit the 'Back' key on IE6 and each page reloads EXCEPT the original search page. I get a message thus...

Warning: Page has Expired The page you requested was created using information you submitted in a form. This page is no longer available. As a security precaution, Internet Explorer does not automatically resubmit your information for you. To resubmit your information and view this Web page, click the Refresh button.

... if only that were true. Hitting F5 brings back the form but it's empty so if I want to proceed I have to put all the information back in. It's made the site pretty much unusable for me.

I'm pretty sure that it's something to do with security settings but I don't know what. I'm not a complete numpty when it comes to computers but if you ask the boffins for help you get back a reponse in 'boffin-speak' which is useless because I don't understand it - I'm a biologist not a computer scientist  :)

Can anyone help please???

Cheers, Karen

Occupation Interests / Re: Chair Driver ??
« on: Saturday 11 February 06 16:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

In earlier times thw two men carrying a sedan chair would be a 'chairmen'. The first time I saw this as an occupation I thought they meant a chairman of the board! Later models which, in Bath, were still operating in the late 1920s, I believe, were wheeled cabinets that the driver operated by means of pulling and steering holding a long handle. I have never heard the chairmen called chair drivers but it sounds plausible with the wheeled variety.

Hi Jane

Many thanks for the link and for the additional ideas. I feel that the woodworking may stretch back into earlier generations. I've had no luck tracing the father of my x3 great grandfather (other than I know his name is John !!) but there was a family in the same town in earlier times who were carpenters and hence it gives me a possible line of enquiry.

It's very strange actually since many years ago, when I had absolutely no idea of this connection, I myself underwent carpentry and bench joinery training on a government TOPS scheme. I passed the course but never took it up professionally - perhaps we have wood in our blood ! Thanks again for all the info, it's much appreciated !

Cheers, Karen
