Durham / Re: Archibald Ramage & Smithson Peverall

Hi All

Just thought I would jump on here and get acquainted. I am descended from Elizabeth Ramage b1813 Chester-le-Street daughter of Henry Ramage and Isabella Airey. Elizabeth married Christopher Carr on 23 May 1830 in St Nicholas, Durham. Their daughter Mary Carr then marries William Dowson my mothers paternal 2 x Great grandfather.

I have only been researching this side of my family for about 4 weeks now as I had been stuck for about 10 years on my "Brick Wall" until the release of the 1911 Military base section.

This particular section of the family seems really fascinating and it is nice to see so many discussing and helping each other.

Regards
Brian

Durham / Re: Durham ancestor; middle name "Ledger"

Hi Rose

If your Hannah Mary Harrison is who I think she is then I can answer why your ancestor has the names "Joseph Ledger" for middle names. Hannah Mary was the youngest daughter of My 4 x Great Grandfather John A Harrison and wife Sarah. Hannah's oldest sister Elizabeth married Joseph Ledger and quite a few of the nephew's have the name Ledger as a middle name. It did help that Joseph and Elizabeth were quite wealthy, Joseph being an Iron Merchant.

Hello Emmy

I am not sure where my Shadforth's came from prior to the mid 1700's. The oldest ancestor I have on this branch is Robert Shadforth b. C1722 who married Jane Shepard in Hartlepool St Hilda's in 1754.

There maybe a possible connection but I could not be certain about this. I do know that the Shadforth's had a strong connection to the church in Hartlepool and that they held high and upstanding careers within that area.
