Im sure this is the correct family, however, the issue we have with the 1861 census is

mary is listed as his wife and not bridgett
james is listed as his son and not thomas

could those be middle names?

Probable marriage in 1852 (Q2) in Stoke on Trent RD: Bridget Towey and Bernard Flinn on same page, vol 6B page 227

2 more issue i have with this family is the on 1871 census, bridgett is Bidgett Towey and not Flynn. also her age has quite a gap

1881 -22 willow cottages - bridgett flynn 58 - head
1871 -22 willow cottages - bridget towey 38 - head
1861 mary flynn (is mary bridgetts middle name??) 30

It seems like both childrens ages change correctly over the census.

I understand that some information changes slightly, but there seems be a few things going on here.

Any ideas to help clear this up? maybe wrong family?

Thanks

Hi keyboard

I've been unable to find this while at the library.  Which site have you used?

Thanks  :)

Baptism (RC) at St Gregory's, Longton 19 April 1857

Thomas Flynn born 14 April 1857, son of Bernard and Bridget (nee Towy).

I noticed that mother Bridget is listed as Bridgett Towey in the 1871 census, with a Towey visitor and another Towey from Mayo living next door.

Hi Sean

Why do you think she has listed her maiden name rather than flinn/Flynn?

Thanks

I found it on Findmypast, don't see it on Ancestry.

Found the record while at the library today, there was 4 pages in total. One had a description of him which was a great find.

Thanks

Thanks all for your replies. I belive it could be my great grandmother. Born in 1897, she died in 1939. The young girl standing, was born 1930 and states on the back of the photo she is 10.  As we know ages can be slightly off, but still it's a tight squeeze and makes this photo the year she died. It makes the older women 42.

Thanks

Maiden Stone - thanks for your lengthy possible explanation. It's a real interesting view. It's deffinatley something which cannot be ruled out. Much appreciated  :)

im doing a little more research into thomas bernard flynn born 1898 his parents thomas and martha flynn but why can i see 2 baptisim records on find my past and both give different dates

I see from another thread about this family that Thomas and Martha married when their son was around 2 years old. I speculate that Martha was Anglican and Thomas was Catholic and that Martha or Martha's family arranged the baptism of baby Thomas at the Anglican church. Once they were married, Thomas Senior may have preferred his son to join his church.
The baptism at the Catholic church was likely to have been "sub conditione" - a conditional baptism which includes the words "if thou not be already baptised, I baptise thee …" since the sacrament of baptism may only be administered once in the Western church tradition (Catholic, Anglican). So the 2nd ceremony would have been a conditional baptism and reception into the Roman Catholic church.
Did Thomas and Martha have other children? Were they baptised as babies into the Catholic church?
If so, the 2nd baptism ceremony for Thomas may have happened so that he was the same as them, attending the same church and church school.
Thomas Bernard may have decided himself that he wanted to go to church with his dad.
3 of my great-aunts were baptised as babies at an Anglican church. They were baptised at the Catholic church in a batch when they were aged 5, 3 and 1. Younger siblings were baptised into the Catholic church shortly after birth. 3 babies died and were buried in the Anglican churchyard where their great-grandmother was. She'd married their GGF in a Catholic church but had some of her children baptised in C. of E., which was her denomination.
