The reason for the award of the 1887 medal? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_Victoria_Golden_Jubilee_Medal

I understand they were given to selected NCOs and men who were part of the parade or at the Spiyhead review. Thats why it would not have been possible to be awarded such a medal if Walsh was in India at the time. I am going to check the dates of the parade and Spithead review and cross reference them with the service papers referred to in another mail.

Far be it for me to stick my neck but not accepting Ashtone's findings is one BIG mistake on your behalf. With an earlier birth date of 1855/6 as per 1901 census aged 35(On Anc*) there is a corresponding GRO birth entry.
Looking at this Matthew's military record he enlisted in 1878, did 21 years service and of all places was discharged in Woolwich, strange he was there in 1901.
Anyway your loss.

SS

Sure and I accept that he is a strong possibility but the service records state that he was initially RA and then Royal Field Artillery (RFA) NOT Royal Garrison Artillery (RGA) as indicated on the paper I have. Also, the fact that my M Walsh he was awarded the 1887 QV Jubillee medal with an 1897 clasp might be unsual for someone who was serving in India at that time. Hopefully this is something I can ask on one of the military forums.

Thanks,

Accepting the age mistake on the 1891 Census transcription, although Dukinfield and Chester were in the same county they are well over 50 miles apart so its a question mark.

He features on my wifes side of the family but we have no more details regarding wife etc.

Thanks but I cant get away from the detail on the 1891 Census "Born 1866 in Chester, Cheshire". I know people often gave incorrect dates but 11 years...........and the place.
The transcription aged 25 seems to be just a typo.

I can see a service record for a Matthew Walsh. Born 1855 in Dukinfield. Enlisted with the RA in 1878.
He enlisted at Sheffield. Discharged in 1900. Served off and on in India.

This soldier's next-of-kin are brothers Thomas and Anderson Walsh in Hollingwood, Manchester.

Thanks but I dont think there could be such a difference in both DoB and place of birth to the detail contained within the 1891 census.

Do you have a marriage for him? Any ideas where and when he died?

What source has him with the RA in 1887?

He was awarded the Queen Victoria 1887 Jubilee medal and also the 1897 clasp. The medal is inscribed RGA which came into exitence after 1899.

I have a Matthew Walsh whose military background I am trying to reseach.

Both the 1891 and 1901 Census has him at Woolwich, London and it states that he was from Chester, Cheshire.  I cannot find any records of his birth/family or where he might have been at the time of the 1871 and 1881 Census.

He was serving with the Royal Artillery in 1887 and later the Royal Garrison Artillery and there is a possibility that he served for sometime in India.

Thanks,
Paul
