Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Ghana marriage
« on: Friday 27 January 12 10:40 GMT (UK)  »
My parents were married on 16.4.1948 in what was then the Gold Coast, but I haven't been able to track down their marriage certificate. I can find them on the passenger lists travelling out, but the marriage is not listed in the overseas registers and I don't actually know where they were. They were Catholic so it would have been a church wedding, and Mum must have only just arrived in the country so they might still have been in Accra. Any clues as to where else to look?

That's amazing! He was John Thomas (Jack) Harkin. There are some golf spoons too. i'm not sure where I found the information about Sir Richard Hill, it might have been Wikipedia............anyway good to hear from you, hope you can find some trace of Mum & Dad in the club records!

Dunbartonshire / Duntocher and the Blitz
« on: Saturday 18 June 11 14:36 BST (UK)  »
Have just watched that BBC2 programme about the Clydebank Blitz...............sorry to say that when Mum was alive I never paid much attention to her talking about the Blitz, but seeing the programme really brought home to me what they went through.
Was Duntocher hit? Are there any maps etc that show where the bombs fell, or any records of the evacuations? Mum said they went to Whitburn but I've no idea how long for or what was left when they went back....................

Other Countries / Cape Coast Hill Club

my parents were married in Ghana (then the Gold Coast), and I have a set of silver spoons that my dad apparently won playing tennis at the club - the name is engraved on them. i found a reference to the club, which was apparently founded in 1927 by Sir Richard Hill, hence the name. Does anyone know if the club still exists and if there are any archives relating to it?

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Re: West Africa marriage certificate

Thanks - have found them on the outgoing passenger lists on findmypast.com - heading out separately. But no sign of a marriage record. Dad was a teacher but I don't know what school he worked in - any other possible sources?

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / West Africa marriage certificate

My parents were married in what was then the Gold Coast after the war. How could I get hold of their marriage certificate? Would they have had to register the marriage in the UK when they came home? I'm not sure of the exact date or where the wedding took place - I've found them on the incoming passenger lists of the "Accra" when they came home but are the outgoing lists available somewhere as well?

Dunbartonshire / Re: Duntocher families

My mother was from Duntocher too.  She was the daughter of Denis O'Connor from Tralee (died 1933) and Mary Cassidy (b. 19.8.1872). Her aunt was Agnes Cassidy ( b. 7.4.1874) who married Joseph McNeil in 1926 and they kept a shop; there was also a brother, Patrick...............and another brother, Francis Cassidy, b. 7.8.1883, who was illegitimate. I'm curious to know what happened to Francis............he married a Maggie Callachan 9.4.1904, and they had twin babies Kate and Mary 7.10.1904.  Kate died a few weeks old, but I can't trace what happened to Mary, or to Francis and Maggie.  They all lived in Old Street. Anyone know?

Family History Beginners Board / Dates

This may be terribly elementary, but how accurate were people in the 19th/early 20th centuries about things like dates of birth etc? I have an ancestor whose d.o.b. varies from 1853 to 1855 depending on which source you're looking at..............clearly they can't all be correct. Maybe it didn't really matter how old people were once they were adult? I think the date of birth on his gravestone is wrong but it was probably put up by in-laws who might have known when his birthday was and roughly his age but not the exact year. any thoughts?
