Hi Andrew, I suspected there may have been another related Henry Sumner, but have never been able to prove or disprove whether it was my direct descendant, Henry, or a different one. Because my Mum was adopted, everything I know is on paper. What I know for Sure - 1) this is his baptismal entry - Baptisms: 16 Jun 1833 St Peter, Formby, Lancashire, England
Henry Sumner - Son of Richard Sumner & Jane  Abode: Formby Occupation: Surgeon
2) Saturday, August 28 1852 - The ship Grasmere 454 tons, arrive Adelaide from Liverpool 16th May. Passengers Thomas R., Janet, Mary Anne, and Henry Sumner (Thomas, his wife and daughter settled in Sth Australia - I assumed that the Henry that come with him was my Henry, 18 years at the time, seeking to make his fortune during the Gold Rush. I presumed he went back to England and married Elizabeth (Betsy) Rigby  Dec 1856, then 3) Hy and Betsy Sumner arrived in Melbourne aboard the "Sir John Franklin" July 20 1857 (Departed Liverpool Apr 15, 1857). With respect to the receipt, don't discount the fact that Henry was educated better than most 12 year olds (his father being a doctor); however, I agree that an older Henry seems more likely

Thank you. I would definitely be interested in seeing this. Greg Nichols

Lancashire / Re: Formby of Burscough
« on: Sunday 14 August 11 02:23 BST (UK)  »
I have been researching the Sumner family (of which I am descended) in the Formby, Burscough, Halsall, Lathom and Ormskirk regions and have come across the Formby family a couple of times.

I managed to find some Formby names emigrating to Australia (all to Adelaide)
•   William Harper Formby arrived in Adelaide aboard the ship “Alice Brooks” in 1839
•   William Formby arrived in Adelaide aboard the ship “Davidsons” in 1843
•   John Formby arrived in Adelaide aboard the ship “Constitution” in 1851
•   Thomas Formby arrived in Adelaide aboard the ship “Constitution” in 1851

I add the above just in case this is not an avenue you have yet explored; Thomas Richard Sumner (and wife Janet, nee Crook and dau Mary Jane) and Henry, his younger brother (and my direct line) stayed with a John Formby when they first arrived in South Australia during the Gold rush. John Formby was to become a very well known and respected South Australian in shipping, politics and law.

This John was the John Formby with which the Sumners stayed not long after their arrival in 1852.

I hope this may be of some use to you

The particular line of enquiry follows this family from the early 1700's in the Lakenheath region of Suffolk to Scarborough, Yorkshire in the 1780's and 1790's, then to Preston, Lancashire in the late 1790's to 1820's then to Preston and Formby throughout the 1800's. The last known patriarch (Thomas Tunnell, excise officer) died in 1807 in Preston, but wife and many daughters lived in Formby and surrounds. The first recorded Thomas of this line was born abt 1723 and married Mirabelle Mortlock in 1746 and Lakenheath manor records note him as being Thomas the younger, indicating his Father's name was Thomas.

Christian names - Thomas, Sarah, Elizabeth, Mary, Jane, Ann, Anna, Simeon, Louise, Frances

Other family links - Sumner, Mortlock, Bennett, Elsdon, Newdick, Haslip, Simpson, Woodroofe, Crook, Williamson & Rigby

Looking for Sumners in the Ormskirk / Walton on the Hill regions, namely Lathom, Chorley, Burscough and Formby
Wanting to confirm
siblings of Richard Sumner b 1797 Lathom, Ormskirk (to parents John Sumner, (Farmer) & Mary Sumner (likely nee Sherrington)
Richard Sumner became a surgeon & apothecary and served the Formby area between 1820 and 1880. He died in 1884
Richard married Jane Tunnell from Scarborough Yorkshire in Dec 1819. They had 9-10 children. At least 2 sons emigrated to Australia. Thomas Richard (to South Australia) and Henry to Port Phillip (Victoria)
Jane died in 1855
Richard married Sarah Winstanley from Liverpool in 1857
Richard was awarded Gold and Silver medals from the Royal Humane Society and the Liverpool Shipwreck Society for his involvement in the rescue of persons shipwrecked on Pilot Boat No 1 "The Good Intent". 13 of the 22 on board perished

Hi there,
I'm hoping you may be able to help here.
I have been researching my family tree and recently discovered that my GGG Grandfather, a Dr Richard Sumner, played a substantial part in the rescue of the crew of pilot Boat No 1 "The Good Intent" during a storm off Formby on 28/29 Nov 1833. Thirteen members of the twenty-two man crew perished, but for his involvement in the rescue, Richard was awarded Gold and Silver medals  from the Royal Humane Society and the Royal Shipwreck Society of London.

I note on several entries on Rootsweb and the above links, that some or all of the following persons may have perished as a result of this shipwreck
Master – William Webster (plus 6 of his crew and 5 people from other Pilot boats)
William Evans
Andrew Heatley (possible, but unsure)
George Gibb (possible, but unsure)
Edmund Richardson (buried at St Thomas Church, Park Lane Liverpool)

I would be very interested to know if you have a list of the 22 members aboard Pilot Boat No 1 around this time (1833), “The Good intent” . I would also like to obtain a list of both saved / not saved - can you steer me in the right direction for this?

Sincerely, Greg Nichols Brisbane, Australia

Richard Sumner and Jane Tunnell are entered in the marriage register (St John's Preston, Lancashire) twice - 3rd October 1818 - this entry was crossed out with a note on the margin "Richard Sumner being under age and not having the consent of his parents were re-married on the 1st of Dec 1819. M.Mark. Curate" (signed)
1st December 1819 - entry is signed in their own hand by all parties, including witness Mary Tunnell (probably her sister, a school teacher).
New Monthly Magazine vol 12 1820 lists (under Lancashire) mentions marriage of Surgeon Richard Sumner, of Chorley to Jane Tunnell of Preston

(I have found records on 8 Sumner children for this couple (1820-1837), namely (from tracing back) my 2nd Great Grandfather, Henry Alfred Sumner (b Formby, Lancashire 1833), whose death certificate (1874, Victoria, Australia) gives me his mother’s name as Sarah Jane Tunnell)

1841 Census records for Formby have helped verify the Sumner family group – Jane age 40. On a separate census record, it also lists the following Tunnells; Elizabeth 45, Anna 40, Mary 40 and Anne 35, all listed as Teachers and all not from Lancashire. Fanny Sumner, aged 4 also appears to be in their care at the time of the census.
Also of interest, the 1851 Formby Census has not only the Sumners with Jane, aged 53 born in Yorks, Scarborough, but living in a separate cottage at the same address, also has Elizabeth Tunnell, age 57, school mistress and Ann Tunnell, age 49, school mistress listed as her sister, with both born in Yorks, Scarborough. They are obviously related and likely all three are sisters.

The 1861 census for the Sumners in Formby has Richard’s wife now listed as Sarah, born in Liverpool, and slightly younger than Jane. Presumably, Jane has died sometime between the censuses of 1851 and 1861, probably in Formby. I have found the burial of a Jane Sumner at St Peter’s in Formby on 16 May 1855 and have only just ordered a Death certificate from the GRO in the last week. I am awaiting this certificate and hoping this may give some details of her parents as well as her.
Ann Tunnell age 64 appears in the 1861 Census Goosnargh, Lancashire, listed as an inmate (workhouse?), unmarried schoolmistress from Yorks, Scarborough. (She was in a hospital, not a workhouse)

In summary, we appear to have Tunnells from my family in the following timeline
1795-1805 – All 5 Tunnell girls born in Scarborough, Yorkshire, to parents unknown. (Possibly Father’s name is Thomas) Other children – not known
1818-1819 – Jane & Mary Tunnell were at St John’s Preston, Lancashire for intended wedding and actual wedding. Jane was living at Preston at this time
1820 onwards – Richard and Jane living in Formby, Lancashire and having children – last child born 1837
1841 – all 5 Tunnell adult girls living (and with the exception of Jane, all teaching) in Formby, Lancashire
1844 – Mary Tunnell appears to have been buried at St Peters , Formby in Feb 1844
1849 – Anna Tunnell appears to have been buried at St Peters, Formby in Apr 1849
1851 – Jane, Anne & Elizabeth all living in Formby, Lancashire
1852 – Elizabeth appears to have been buried at St Peters, Formby in Oct 1852
*1855 – Jane appears to have been buried at St Peters, Formby in May 1855 – await copy of Death certificate
1861 – Richard presumably has a new wife named Sarah, and daughter (to Jane), Fanny, all living at Formby.
1861 - Ann Tunnell is living in Goosnargh, Lancashire
1871 – Richard, Sarah and unmarried daughter Fanny still living in Formby. 2 grandchildren also listed
1874 – Ann Tunnell – Death record lists age as 78yo – i.e. approx 5-6 years out compared to the Census
1881 – Richard, son John Bennett Sumner and Fanny living in Formby
*May-Jun 1884 – Richard Sumner died in Formby, son John Bennett Sumner appears to have died at the same time – await copy of death certificate for Richard

Seeking any possible Tunnell / Sumner links
