Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Raincoat factory in walsall
« on: Wednesday 15 March 23 01:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I know it’s a long shot but I think My dad was related to the owner of a raincoat and rubber factory that was behind mill lane, butts in walsall. I remember it as a child as my grannie lived at No 81 mill lane and her garden wall met the factory land and the factory with lots of blacked out windows was to the left. Now 45 years on from my memory the factory has gone. I don’t know of the name of it or who was the registered owner and have tried to do some research but to no avail. I live in the northeast in Darlington so I’m not close either to go to the walsall archives either. Can anyone shed any light on this factory and it’s owner? My dad was born in 1928 so it’s the owner around that time I’m
Interested in. Thank u for your time and any help u can give me

isaac dawson was bens dad (b. 1842). ben was born in 1873 in langdale. (died 1958). he had a sister - maggie born in 1876 and brother harry born in 1872. benns SON harry was born in 1898, and daughter mary in 1905.
SO the harry you are referring to is benns BROTHER, not his SON!!!

i will tell you what i know about issac and his predecessors -
issac bibby dawson - born 1842 in nether wasdale. his occupations were: tailor, slate miner and general agricultural labourer.
he married mary grave on 2 nov 1865 in langdale by ambleside.
issac had 5 half siblings who his mother had wen she was married to william dawson.
william dawson died WELL before isaac was born in 1842, and on isaac'a birth certificate no father is shown! however, on the census of 1841, his mother, elizabeth dawson (nee rodgers), is shown as the householder of a small farm and living in THE SAME HOUSE is the FARM MANAGER - JOSEPH BIBBY!!!
I am guessing that joseph bibby (born 1806), was issac's father, hence the name 'bibby' in his name!!! so his offspring shpould have been named BIBBY and not dawson!!!
Issac's mother, elizabeth was born in birker in 1801, and married william dawson in 1820. she had 5 children with him - joseph - 1826, thomas - 1831, rodger - 1834, sarah - 1836, elizabeth - 1838. the 1841 shows no sign of her husband william dawson so he could have died?
the 1841 census also shows elizabeth's mother, also called elizabeth living with her who was born in cumberland in 1761. (haven't got any more info on that line).
i don't have a death date or place for isaac bibby dawson, but i have more info on his wife's line. -
isaac's wife was born mary grave in 1834 in oxen fell, hawkshead. she died in 1899 in kendal.
when she married isaac in 1865, she was a widow of john parker (born 1830), who she had married in 1862 in ulverston. (don't know date of parker's death). she had 7 siblings: ben - 1816, dinah - 1826, george - 1826, daniel - 1829, joseph - 1831, james - 1838, john - 1842.
mary grave's parents were: ben grave (1786 - 1844), who was a farmer of 50 acres employing 3 men! he was born in oxen fell, and died in ulverston. he married margaret dawson (mary's mom), on 10 dec 1808 in hawkshead. margaret was born in conistone, lancs, in 1791. i don't have a death date for her.

well, that is ALL the info i have on that line of my husband's family. benn's daughter, mary dawson, (your harry's niece), married harry nelson in 1934 and had one daughter - ruth in 1940. she is my mother in law! she married brian mcpoland in 1962, and had alison in 1965 and my husband andrew in 1968. i hope this info helps you out - we were all really surprised to find out about isaac's parentage, and my mother in law was pleased her mother wasn't around anymore to find out that she should have been called 'bibby' instead of 'dawson'!!!
kind regards, erica

Hi - but this benn and harry our not the same ones as in my husband's family! I know for a fact that harry died without issue. (my husband's grannie - mary was his only sibling and she was about 8 years younger and told me this). i know all about benn's family as my mother in law is his only granddaughter, so she knows all about the family, and the people you mention are not the same family i'm afraid! (common names!) thanx

Shropshire / Margaret RICHARDSON - Wellington?
« on: Thursday 25 February 10 23:46 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find my Great Grandmother Margaret Richardson who lived in Kings street, Wellington, Shropshire when she gave birth to my Nan Dorothy Ricahrdson on 27th April 1908.
Margaret is listed as 'Domestic Servant Housekeeper' on the Birth Cert and that is ALL the info i have on her! I sent away for my Nan's BC to find her Fathers details are not given and this info about her Mother. My Nan was in Wellington Workhouse until aged 13 and no other details are known.
I cannot find either of them on the 1911 census, and there is ONE Margaret Richardson on the 1901 census in Shropshire which may well be her.
ANY help or info you can give me on Margaret Richardson would be greatly appreciated as me and my Sister have been searching for her for ages without success.
Thank you and kind regards.

Hi,

I noticed that you have Richardsons in your family tree and that your Dad came from Wellington, Shropshire. I don't know if you can help me but here goes...... My Nan was born Dorothy Richardson on 27th April 1908 at Kings street, Wellington. her Fathers details are not given but her Mother is named as Margaret Richardson of King street, Domestic servant Housekeeper. My Nan ended up in the Workhouse as it was then from where she was taken in aged 13 by an Emily Blount. She married my Grandad John Job Briscoe in 1930.
For about 3 years now my Sister and I have been trying to find out anything about the Richardson line with little success. We found a Margaret Richardson in Shrewsbury in 1901 working for a licenced vituler as a Domestic servant which could be her but we can't trace any Margaret R in the 1911 census in Shropshire. My Nan was always ashamed of where she came from so we only know the name of her Mother because i sent away for a copy of her Birth Cert.
Have you any Margaret Richardsons in your line in Shropshire/Staffs who may fir the bill? I know it's a very long shot but we have been stuck now for such a long time.
Many thanks and regards,
Erica.

Hi!
i have no idea if we are the same family i'm afraid, but i must admit we might be as my earliest Downing was a John Dunning/Downing around the same time - 1690's. (In the Midlands). They may be brothers or Cousins? I have very little info on the early Downings and what i have got is detailed on my family tree on Genes Reunited. Another lady who has a Downing connection gave me access to her tree on that and that's where i got alot of my info from. I would suggest you join it and get access to my tree if you would like. Enter DERRIK DOWNING (note spelling of derrik - my late Dad), in the search engine on there and you can ask me to access my tree thereon. I have also had LOTS of help here on Roots by posting queries. People are SO friendly and very helpful and they have helped me so much to find out information. I hope this helps some.
Kind regards, Erica.
