Fascinating detective work. Far too many couples called John and Mary. I spent the evening comparing your research with my far less complete puzzle. I presume your conclusion that John, George, Thomas, William and Anne are the children of John and Mary of Damerham is the result of exhaustive parish record research. Are you of the opinion that this John Whitfield is likely to be a child of the older John/Mary of Alvediston?

Thanks so much for this information. I was aware of Johns father Thomas and an Ancestry family tree named his mother as Elizabeth Beeching but much of the rest of the information is new to me. I am most grateful for any information you have on this line as I seem to have reached a dead end at the moment.
Thanks again.

Are there any records of joining the Territorial Force other than in the Service Records?

Thanks for that.
Have you come across lots of Whitfields in Damerham Nell or is John the only one?
Any idea what parishes surrounded Damerham at this time?

Could that be the John who married Susannah Barter at Rockbourne in 1772?

He was CSM A Whitfield and his number was 203200.

His Territorial War Medal shows Private A Whitfield Hampshire Rgt and his number is 1046.

Thank you for all the information. I have only recently discovered that he was in the 1/7 after finding a photo of him described as C company 7th battalion Hampshire Rgt. The regimental museum confirmed it was the 7th because they were wearing the dog gauge cap badges. His medal roll index card didn't mention this so we had always assumed he was in the 1/4 for the duration of the war. I have his medals and they don't include the Imperial Service Badge but do include the Efficiency Medal which I believe was for long service in the Territorials.

Looking again Nell I don't know why I reached that conclusion. There don't seem to be many Whitfields born in Cranborne. I can only find Harriot and George Whitfield children of James and Mary.
Could not born in Hampshire suggest Damerham as a possibility as it's another border hopping parish between Hampshire and Wiltshire isn't it?

Recently discovered my grandfather was in the 1/7 Hampshires before his transfer to the 1/4 in Mesopotamia in 1916. Can anyone help with information about the 1/7 Battalion before the war or between 1914 and 1916?
