New Zealand / Death/burial details for Edmond ANDRAHAN
« on: Monday 22 April 24 06:10 BST (UK)  »
Private Edmond ANDRAHAN, 43rd Monmouthshire Light Infantry No 2775 came to NZ on the ship Lady Jocelyn which arrived in Auckland ex Calcutta on 10 December 1863.

He fought at the Battle of Gate Pa [29 April 1864] and the Battle of Te Ranga [21 June 1864], Tauranga.

The book Discharged in NZ by Hugh and Lyn Hughes records that he was born in Glynn, Limerick and was discharged 24 March 1866 in OT [Otago?]

I am looking for death and burial details.

I have searched The Wilson Collection, NZ Ancestry Search Helper, The Collections - Archives NZ, electoral roll for Dunedin 1866-67, Familysearch, Ancestry and Paperspast.  Also checked the Dunedin City Council cemetery records online.

Grateful for any assistance.

Scotland / Robert A[Alexander] HUNTER b c 1857, Scotland who are his parents?
« on: Monday 01 April 24 02:22 BST (UK)  »
Grateful for any assistance to identify the parents of a Robert A[Alexander] HUNTER born c 1857, Scotland.  County not known.

What I know: Robert A Hunter b 1857, Scotland immigrated to the USA (Michigan) c 1876 (source US 1920 census record).  He married Elizabeth Wotherspoon in the USA sometime between 1877-1886.  She was b c 1858, Scotland.  She arrived in the USA c 1877.
They had a son Robert A Hunter (Jnr) born 4 July 1886 Detroit, Michigan.  He married Rossie Bowman in 1920.  Robert A Hunter Jnr died in 1965 in Custer, Mason, Michigan, USA.  The 1920 census gives Robert Snr occupation as Confectioner.

Checked: Familysearch, Ancestry Public Family Trees, US census 1910, 1920 and 1940.  The 1940 census gives the transcribed surname as "Huster", living at Mason, Michigan.  Contacted 3 Ancestry account holders who have these people in their family tree - no response to date.

I have a low DNA match to a Hunter family from around Dalry, Ayrshire.  I found a John Hunter b 6 January 1827, Templand, Dalry but not sure if there is a connection.  I have had trouble searching due to the common names in the area.  It appears that their occupation may have been Baker.

Any assistance appreciated.

Armed Forces / WW2 36 NZ Survey Battery Diary advice sought
« on: Friday 26 January 24 23:58 GMT (UK)  »
During WW2 my father served in the 36 NZ Survey Battery.  He was M/I from 32 NZ Field Regiment to Advance Base 36 NZ Survey Battery on 25 September 1943.

On 5 November 1944 he was M/O from 36 NZ Survey Battery to NZ Artillery Corps.

Archives NZ Wellington hold the monthly diary of the 36 NZ Survey Battery during the above period.  The cost to digitise the monthly diary is likely to range between $35 [cost for Oct 1944] - $70 [cost for Sept 1943].

I know very little about his time in the Army during WW2 and what little I know is mainly from his WW2 Military personnel record.  I do however know he was at Monte Cassino as I have some photos.  I am seeking to find out as much info as I can about his time in Italy.  At the end of the war he was in Trieste, as he was presented with a photo signed by D Celestino Cerri? and dated 22 June 1945.  This photo was of the summits of Jof Fuart.

I would be interested in advice as to whether it would be useful to pay for the digitising of the monthly diary or whether I should look to find someone who would be willing to visit Archives NZ in Wellington to inspect the records for any relevant information on a paid basis?

Grateful for any advice.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Handwriting query
« on: Sunday 14 January 24 03:48 GMT (UK)  »
Grateful if someone can help with the name of the "friend" written on the back of a photo.  I can read the following:

"Presented to Trevor Napier by his friend D (surname?)
Trieste 22 June 1945"

This inscription is on the back of a photo which appears to be of the Trieste mountain peaks.

After WW2 ended I do know that my father [Trevor Napier] who was in the 2 NZEF went skiing while waiting for a ship to return to NZ.  He arrived back in NZ on 13 January 1946.

Also, after the war he kept in touch for several years, with someone [name not known] in Italy, who was a Medical Doctor.  Same person????

Any help appreciated.

Armed Forces / Lookup Request John CONNELLY 68th Durham Light Infantry
« on: Saturday 09 December 23 02:06 GMT (UK)  »
Grateful if someone is able to lookup the service record for a John CONNELLY, 68th Durham Light Infantry, Regimental No 3507.

A book "Well Done the 68th, Appendix 2" lists John CONNELLY as a soldier who served in Crimea and in New Zealand but died before 1 March 1869 and therefore did not quality for the New Zealand Medal.  His date of death is given as 30 April 1864.   This is the day after the Battle at Gate Pa (Pukehinahina) New Zealand.

Any of the lists incl Daily Southern Cross newspaper 2 May 1864, that I hold do not mention a John Connelly who was either wounded or died following the Battle at Gate Pa.  Was he at Gate Pa?

Any assistance appreciated.

I am not connected to the family, but seeking assistance, if possible with the death details only of the following person:

Name: Private Patrick KELLY

Regimental No: 3264
Was at Gate Pa (Pukehinahina) New Zealand on 29 April 1864.  Awarded the NZ Medal
His name appears on the 68th Regiment Medal Roll of March 1869, Manchester
Born: 1836 Birr, near Dublin, Ireland.

I have been given the birth details by a fellow researcher [source: Ancestry/Service Record], but who does not know his death details.

The common name has made the search difficult.  Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Following is the link to a 1911 NZ newspaper article which refers to the award of a Gold Medal for Bravery to a Lieutenant Klintberg [Swedish Naval Officer] who served on the HMS Curacoa and was at the Battle of Gate Pa (Pukehinahina), New Zealand on 29 April 1864.  His name appears on the New Zealand Medal Roll as Klintberg, A.F. [August Frederik Hjalmar Klintberg]

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/NZH19110322.2.129?end_date=31-12-1930&items_per_page=10&phrase=2&query=Klintberg&snippet=true&start_date=01-01-1850

This article refers to the Award for Bravery by the British Government which I am seeking to verify.

In an email from a fellow researcher I have been advised that "in the chaotic retreat of the British withdrawal he rescued Lieutenant Duff while under fire".

Lt [George Graham] Duff was severely injured at Gate Pa and died from wounds received in the attack, in London on 21 November 1879 (source NZ Herald, 28 Jan 1879, Pg 2)

Grateful if someone is able to help verify the above information.
