Angus (Forfarshire) / Robert Wilson/Annie Crabbie - BRICK WALL D:
« on: Sunday 02 January 11 21:42 GMT (UK)  »
Alright I've been stuck on this for a while now.

My Gx4 grandparents were Robert Wilson and Annie Crabbie. The only details I have are from their daughter's death certificate: Robert was a millwright/engineer. IGI tells me they married on 20th June 1789 in Kinnell, Angus.

The aforementioned daughter was Isabella Wilson, born 3rd June 1815 in Tannadice. She married James Kinnes in 1837 in Dundee and died in 1900 in Inverkeithing, Fife.

Since she was married in 1837 I can't find the Wilson family on the 1841 census; the names are all too common.

Any suggestions on narrowing it down?

Scotland / Jimmy/James Newberry
« on: Friday 17 September 10 12:46 BST (UK)  »
This is a long shot but I thought I'd ask anyway.

From the offset I'll state this probably involves living people, so PM me if you have any answers.

My grandparents married in 1946, in Thornton, Fife. Both are now dead. One of the witnesses, and, I therefore assume, the best man, was John A Harris/Norris, who lived at 29 High Street, Markinch, Fife (the house is now a shop so no need to remove the address, moderators!). However, my father is convinced the man in the photo is actually called Jimmy or James Newberry, who was my grandfather's best friend. My father never met Mr Newberry, so we think he moved away in the 1950s or early '60s.

The only James Newberry on ScotlandsPeople was born in 1920 and died in 1991, although he died in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, rather than anywhere near Fife. But this may be where he moved to.

Essentially I'm looking for anyone either researching this name or - even better - this family, and their descendants (if there were any). So please PM me if you know of anyone researching this line or if on the off chance you know the man in question.

Perthshire / Perthshire Newspapers Early 1900s
« on: Thursday 08 April 10 12:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

Can anyone tell me if they've come across a newspaper for the Longforgan area about 1916? I've got a great great uncle who drowned age 13 in a quarry near Errol, chances are it'd be included in a paper.

Midlothian / James Sutherland d1868, Leith
« on: Sunday 17 January 10 20:03 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for some info on James Sutherland, son of Neil Sutherland and Janet Campbell, who died in Leith, 27 March 1868 age 57. He was born in Balnabruich, Dunbeath, Caithness in 1812 and married Elizabeth Campbell. The only marriage I could find was on IGI as 23 September 1861. If the rest of his family (brothers and sisters etc) are anything to go by, he'd have been married before this as well.

As far as any children go, IGI has James born 11 March 1862, William born 11 April 1865 and Janet born 28 June 1865, all in Leith. Obviously William and Janet couldn't have been born nearly three months apart so I'm taking the IGI results with a pinch of salt.

Can anyone find them on a census, or tell me what happened to Elizabeth? All I know is that she died after James. She may have remarried, which could explain why I can't find her.

Perthshire / William Small/Margaret Anderson
« on: Thursday 26 November 09 17:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, just wondering if there's anyone researching this family.

I have no information on William Small or his wife Margaret Anderson, but I'm assuming they both died before 1855. Perhaps someone can find them on the 1841 or 1851 census? They had at least eight children:

Anne b1789
George b1790
Margaret b1792
James b1794
Janet b1796
Marjory b1798
Helen b1800
William b1805

IGI has most of the children born in Coupar Angus, but later censuses for James says he was born in Bethick, Perthshire.

So far I've found James married Isabella/Helen Ferguson and had six children and died in 1877 in Cargill, Perthshire.

Helen died in 1863, and William in 1898, both unmarried.

James and Isabella had at least six children:

James b1820
Alexander b1823
Mary Smith b1827
Janet b1829
Isabel b1834
Margaret b18??

Other than James b1820 I have no information on the other children.

James married Janet Aitken and had at least seven children:

John b c1843
James b1846
William b1847
Agnes b1849
Mary Fraser b1855
Arthur Ferguson b1858
Elizabeth b1860

Janet died in 1863 and James married again to Christian Scott Paul. They had four children:

Allan Paul b1866
George Paul b1869
Amelia Mary Ann Salmond b1871
Robert Brotherton b1876

Any help is appreciated, and I'd love to find someone else descended from this line. :)

South Africa / KINNES/KINNIS
« on: Friday 25 September 09 12:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

Not a request as such - just searching for anyone related to Kinneses in South Africa or anyone researching the name to share information with.

As far as I know, all Kinneses in SA are descended from Robert Kinnes born c1854 in Dundee, Scotland. He owned the Kinnes Whaling Company. A few of his children, such as Angus Carr Kinnes, moved to South Africa after 1901.

If anyone else is researching this line or another one I don't know about, let yourselves be known. :)

Lancashire / FENTON - Bolton
« on: Sunday 20 September 09 18:48 BST (UK)  »
My great great uncle Stewart Fenton was born 12 Aug 1895 in St Andrews, Fife, Scotland and married Katherine Harley Small (born 10 Dec 1904 in Mains, Angus, Scotland) on 28 Aug 1925 in Forgan, Fife. They had a daughter known as "Jem".

My great uncle recently told me that the family moved to Bolton - this is why I couldn't find Stewart or Katherine's death certificates in the Scottish archives. I can't find a birth for Jem Fenton either, but since that was unlikely to be her real name, this doesn't necessarily mean she was born outwith Scotland.

I was just wondering if anyone could help me find deaths for Stewart and Katherine; I've checked some of the resources on this site but I don't know what cemeteries are in Bolton and what ones aren't. If anyone has any suggestions they will be most welcome. :)

« on: Monday 14 September 09 09:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

Just wondering if anyone has any VICKERS in their family tree. My great grandmother was Ellen Winifred Vickers born 7 Jan 1906 in 7 Chesham Terrace, Chesham Street, Leamington. She married Seymour Clement Bromley in 1925. She was one of nine children; her parents were William Henry Vickers and Alice Hydon. William was born c1875, I don't know who his mother was but his father was also William Vickers. If anyone has any information on William senior, that would be great.

William Henry Vickers b1899
Gladys Maud Vickers b1901
Alfred James Vickers b1903
Ellen Winifred Vickers b1906

The Common Room / Walter Benjamin Sutherland (1886 - 1918)
« on: Wednesday 20 May 09 14:00 BST (UK)  »
I'm really not sure where to put this thread so I thought I'd chance my luck here.

My great great uncle Walter Benjamin Sutherland was born 25 September 1886 in New Street, Markinch, Fife, Scotland, sixth child of William Sutherland and Elizabeth Mowat. In the 1891 census he's at home with his parents in Markinch, not sure where he is in 1901 but probably the same place. As far as I know he never married and had no children. He was a Saddler, like his father and two of his brothers. Walter died 13 May 1918 in 133 High Street, Leslie, Fife, age 32 years of Pulmonary Phthisis. The informant was William Sutherland, father (present).

So what's so odd about this? Well, nothing really. But on his gravestone, which is part of my Sutherland family plot, it says:

WALTER BENJAMIN SUTHERLAND
of Battle Creek, Michigan
Died 13th May 1918 age 32

Wait a minute, where on Earth did this Battle Creek business come into it? ??? I can't find any reference to this anywhere and that's what this topic is all about. Can anyone shed some light on this, or point me in the right direction to find something about it?

My initial thought was that he moved and died there, but he died a few miles from his parents. Then I thought he may have died during the First World War there or had been fighting there. But he died of TB! Perhaps he was invalided home because of the illness? If anyone could help, that'd be great.
