Lancashire / Charles Thomas Donbavand, born 1853, Manchester, Lancashire
« on: Monday 18 March 24 22:55 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks to the excellent researchers looking for my last request, I am now hoping that Charles Thomas Donbavand, born 1853 in Manchester can be found.

There are many ways the enumerators have spelled the name over the years but I still cannot locate him.

Charles was born to George Donbavand and Elizabeth Davies (some records show this as Davis) in 1853 and was baptised in Manchester Cathedral on the 24th April 1853.

He is on the 1861 census living with his father George, siblings and lodgers. His mother had died after her youngest child Annie had been born.

In 1871, Charles is living in Wilfred Street, Salford with his sister Mary Jane and her husband Robert Bingley Crabtree.

In 1874 he is admitted into Manchester Prison for being Drunk and Riotess. His surname is spelled as Dunbain.
He gives his address as Lower ..aughton Road  -  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KDG8-1MD
and his sister’s name Maria Donbavand.

From this I know both Charles and Maria are still alive in 1874 and neither have married.

Whilst his sisters : Mary Jane, 1844 -1887;   Sarah Elizabeth, b.1855 ; Alice, 1858 - 1905 ; Annie, 1860 - 1912 can all be accounted for, Charles, Maria, born 1848 and Hannah born 1857, cannot be found.

Any help in locating would be very much appreciated. I have tried various ways of spelling Donbavand but …….

I joked in my last posting that I hope I don’t find any more ancestors who have broken the law. Charles has had one encounter with the police, has he had more I wonder.

Thank you in anticipation of finding Thomas.
Many thanks

Hi.

My great grandmother had a sister Annie Elizabeth Donbavand who was born in 1860 in Cholton Lancashire, UK. Sadly their mother died shortly after her birth and their father not long after.

I have searched and searched for Annie and think I may have found a possible marriage for her but the record I have found is in Manhattan, New York.
I cannot find any lists for sailing with her on ancestry either.
I do not have WW subscription, only UK so wondered if someone would kindly check the records for me please.

The record I have found indicates a marriage on the 4th November 1890 in Manhattan, New York.
The groom is George Slatford.

Do records in America state who the bride’s father is?
The name Annie Donbavand is quite a common name at that time.

In 1910 there is a chance that Annie and George are living in Los Angeles and have children.

Many thanks for your help.

« on: Saturday 07 October 23 21:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi.

George Walter Hawkes was in the Canadian forces in WW2 and based in the Windsor area in England.

Does anyone know how I can get his records in order to find out when he left the UK and his unit.

Also how can I find out if and when he returned to the UK. Are there any records of travel from Canada to the UK?

Thank you

Berkshire / “Archmore”, Mill Lane, Kidmore End, Reading
« on: Tuesday 03 October 23 18:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I’ve just discovered that a baby who was born in Birdhurst Lodge, Croydon in 1948 was put in “Archmore”, Mill Lane, Kidmore End, Reading between 1948 and 1950.

Whilst I have found information about the unmarried mother’s home at Birdhurst Lodge, I cannot find anything about “Archmore”.

Does anyone know anything about “Archmore”?
When it operated as a home for young babies…
A photograph of it…
Why a baby would be sent from Croydon to Reading…

Many thanks

Monmouthshire / Shipping vessel CRINDAW (pre 1888) registered in Newport
« on: Thursday 27 July 23 21:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have found a record for the death of Thomas George in 1888 after he fell off the Quay into the water and sank in Tonnay-Charente, France.

Trying to read the name of the shipping vessel, it looks like Crindaw but has been transcribed as Cundaw.

I have tried looking for details about the ship which was registered in Newport but been unsuccessful.

Is there anyone who is interested in ships that knows anything about this vessel please.

Many thanks

Devon / Asylum at Heavitree, Exeter.
« on: Saturday 10 June 23 15:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Does anyone know where the patients who died whilst in the asylum at Heavitree, Exeter were buried?

Did the Asylum have its own burial ground like some other institutions did?

I have contacted Exeter Bereavement Services and local churches but cannot find a burial plot for Thomas Jones who died 6 February 1906.

Thomas’s home was Cardiff and because of an agreement with Devon, patients from Cardiff were sent to Heavitree Asylem in the early 1900s because the county asylum was full. Cardiff built its own metal hospital which opened in 1908.

Thomas was not repatriated to Cardiff.

Many thanks

Glamorganshire / Reasons for a Cardiff resident being sent to an Asylum in Exeter
« on: Wednesday 07 June 23 15:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Thomas Jones died in the Asylum in Heavitree, Exeter in February 1906.

Further research shows that he entered the Asylum in June 1905 however I have not been able to find the Register of Admissions yet to find out the reason.

Does anyone know why someone who lived in Cardiff would be sent to an Asylum in Exeter in June 1905 especially when he made his Will only the month before.

Did Cardiff have an arrangement to send people to the Heavitree Asylum does anyone know?

Could a crime have been committed and it was felt an Asylum would be more suitable than prison?
If so why Exeter and not Pontypridd or one nearer to Cardiff.

I have looked at the newspapers but cannot find anything so am asking for help please.

Many thanks

Glamorganshire / Ellen Mahoney born 1864
« on: Friday 12 May 23 20:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have spent countless hours searching for more information about Ellen Mahoney, born Q4, 1864 Newport Monmouthshire, mother’s maiden name FYNN.

Ellen married Thomas GEORGE Q4, 1884 in Newport. Thomas died Q2, 1886 aged 65 years.

My husband believes he has found her living at 1 Worcester Terrace, Bristol on the 1891 census and she is a cook and domestic but ………. has he????

Ellen is in Cardiff by 1901 because she marries widower Thomas JONES in St David’s RC Church Cardiff on 9th February 1901.

On her marriage certificate Ellen gives her father’s name as Florence Mahoney and his occupation as a “sailmaker”.
Hannah O’Callaghan and Francis Mulhollen are witnesses to the marriage. Whether they are friends or relatives or just parishioners of the church we don’t know.
Her address is given as 20, Pembroke Terrace, Cardiff and she is a widow.

Prior to marrying Ellen, Thomas lived in Station Terrace, Cardiff with his wife Sarah, before her death in 1897 and after with some of his children. (Thomas and Sarah had about 14 children and she died in childbirth in 1897.)

After marrying, Ellen and Thomas lived in Howard Street, Cardiff then in 1902 they lived in Silver Street, Cardiff.

Thomas JONES died on 19th May 1906 so Ellen was a widow again.

Meeting a descendent of one of Thomas’s children a few years ago, we were told that Thomas’s children “fell out” with him because of the marriage and the fact that she took all his money.

We didn’t think the JONES family were very rich but doing further research on the JONES family discovered that along with his home in Station Terrace, Thomas JONES collected the rents of a few houses in Cardiff that he held the LEASES for. (He was left them in the WILL of his father David).

Using Kelly’s Directory, Ellen was head of the house in Station Terrace in 1907 and was still there in 1912.

Of course we now know why there was animosity with Thomas’s children. It’s obvious that Ellen inherited the leases of the properties and so collected the rents. Thomas did not leave a Will.

My husband would like to know what happened to Ellen.

Also the answer to the question - how long would someone be able to collect the rents on property that they hold the leases for?

How can we find out more about Property Leases.

Many thanks for all your help.

Lancashire / Clarice Irene Green married John Smith 1929
« on: Saturday 29 April 23 15:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Clarice Irene Green was born 4th February 1908 in Pontypridd, Glamorganshire to Gwladys Margaret Green.
In 1911 she is listed as Clarinde Green and described as the daughter of Gwladys’s parents - Ellen Elizabeth and Henry Vicary Green.
Gwladys married James William Cuff in 1915 in Bootle and on the 1921 census Clarice is listed as “wife’s daughter”.

I have found a marriage for Clarice Irene Green to John Smith in December 1929 in Withington, Lancashire and I am now stuck.

John Smith is the son of Arthur Henry Smith and his wife Sarah Ellen.
Arthur has died by 1921 and John is living at home with his mother and some siblings. He is an office clerk at John Alfred & Sons.

I have tried finding Clarice and John on the 1939 register but although I have found a possible address on electoral registers - 1110 Chester Road, Stretford, I cannot locate this address on the 1939 register.

Trying to see if they had children is impossible. SMITH / GREEN is as bad as Jones and Thomas and Davies!!! (and I’ve plenty of those!!)

I have tried looking for John Alfred coal merchants but been unsuccessful.

Is there anyone who can point me in the right direction so that I can try to find any descendants of Clarice and John.

(I know that Clarice had 2 brothers and I have researched them thoroughly but on finding descendants they know nothing about Clarice.)

Thank you in anticipation
