The Common Room / Married twice? COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 20 February 10 11:34 GMT (UK)  »
I have found on FreeBMD 2 references for the 2nd marriage of my 4x gt grandmother Ann Brownsword (nee Green) to Ambrose Turner, one in the March quarter of 1851 and one in the June quarter of the same year.  I have the certificate for the first one. The marriage took place at St Matthews Church in Etruria on 2 Mar 1851.  The Staffordshire BMD website only generates one reference when I search for this couple.  Is this just an indexing error of some sort or is anything else going on. (The pair are down as married in the 1851 census)

Kent / Motor Industry Employment in Maidstone ~1930
« on: Saturday 14 November 09 09:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, I wonder if anyone can help me with a Kent question.

My father had an older brother born in Maidstone in 1930. My grandparents lived in Coventry throughout the 1920s and my father was born in Coventry in 1933. My grandfather was an engineer in the motor industry. Does anyone have any idea why they might have been in Maidstone?

The Lighter Side / Why I love certificates.
« on: Wednesday 14 October 09 12:33 BST (UK)  »
I received an 1859 marriage certificate this morning for my 3x gt grandparents and I can't resist the temptation to share.

One of the witnesses was the groom's sister Frances.  A quick trip to Ancestry found Frances in 1861 as a servant in the other witness's household.  It seems these 2 witnesses eventually married each other for I then found them in 1901 with one of Frances's other unmarried sisters living in their household. Then back to 1891 where there's yet another widowed sister-in-law with them.

So for the price of one marriage certificate (and the Ancestry subscription if you want to be picky) I have found out what happened to 3 of my 4x great aunts.    8)

Family History Beginners Board / A widow's illegitimate child
« on: Wednesday 12 August 09 13:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I wonder if anyone could tell me what was the normal practice for naming the child of a widow born 3 years after the death of the mother's husband.  This would be around 1864.
