Dorset Lookup Requests / Re: Jane Watts of Stalbridge/Lydlinch

Thanks for your reply. I've actually been able to find out a fair amount about Jane from the time of her marriage to George Poole and forward. But I can't find anything about her prior to the marriage. That's why the Lydlinch settlement examination and Bastardy bond intrigued. They may well provide clues as to her origins

Dorset Lookup Requests / Jane Watts of Stalbridge/Lydlinch

Hello,

Jane Watts married George Poole of Stalbridge on 2 April 1798. I am trying to find out a little bit more about Jane (where and when she was born, who her parents were). Census and burial records suggest she was probably born in the early to mid 1760s. An online search of the Dorset For You archives yielded two intriguing records, which may shed some light on Jane's earlier life.

1      Settlement Examination of JaneWatts, now residing in Stalbridge (PE-LYD/OV/3/2/9)
file
1779

2      Bond entered into by Benjamin Prankard of Stalbridge, hosier and Samuel Prankard of     Stalbridge, hosier (reputed father) to indemnify the parish from paying maintenance for the illegitimate child of JaneWatts (PE-LYD/OV/5/1/9)

I'd love to see these docs but as I live in Nova Scotia a trip to Dorchester is out of the question -- at least for now. I checked Ancestry and these records have not yet made it onto their site. I'm wondering whether someone in Dorset might get a chance to have a peek at these docs on my behalf during a trip to the Dorset History Centre. I'd be delighted to reciprocate if anyone happens to have any Nova Scotia archival enquiries.

Dorset Lookup Requests / Re: Stalbridge Parish Registers - POOLE

Thanks for your reply. I've actually been in touch with Sue, who was very helpful, but, alas, she found no record of Henry after his christening. I think the most promising set of records are the account books of the Overseers of the Poor for the parish of Stalbridge. I know the family relceived some relief -- I had an archivist in Dorchester take a look for me -- but a more thorough search of the records would require a trip to Dorset -- a daunting prospect for a Nova Scotian. Thanks again for your interest.

Dorset Lookup Requests / Stalbridge Parish Registers - POOLE
« on: Tuesday 29 April 14 18:29 BST (UK)  »
The baptism of Henry Poole, son of George and Jane Poole, was recorded 24 March 1799 in Stalbridge. I have found records pertaining to other family members, but what I can't find is ANY record of Henry other than the aforementioned baptismal registration. No marriage, no burial, no obvious appearance in the 1841 census. For selfish reasons, I'm hoping that this means that Henry Poole left Dorset for Newfoundland and is the same Henry Poole, now married to Catherine (last name unknown), that was living in Lance Cove, Trinity Bay in 1833. If you can provide any information about this Stalbridge native, especially any info linking him to the Newfoundland Trade, Pooles everywhere will thank you -- okay, maybe not, but I will thank you profusely!

Thanks for your reply. I've managed to find several records for the family. But what I can't find is any record of Henry Poole other than the baptism document that you found. I've found no record of a marriage or death and he does not appear to have been in Dorset when the 1841 census was carried out. So where did he go? Maybe someone has an idea about what records I can look at to see whether he was engaged by one of the Poole merchant firms (possibly the Slades?) that were involved in the Newfoundland Trade.

Dorset / Henry Poole, born 1799, Stalbridge

In 1833, Henry and Catherine Poole were living in Lance Cove, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland. It's highly probable that Henry came to Newfoundland from the West Country -- family sources say Dorset or Devon. Church records suggest a birth date in the 1790s (there are conflicting dates in the documents). My online search turned up few candidates, but Henry Poole, born in Stalbridge in 1799, is intriguing. Henry's parents were George and Jane Poole. He had a brother Samuel and a sister Charlotte. I know these are common names but all of them are prominent in subsequent generations of my family. Does anyone know what became of this Henry Poole? Is it possible that he emigrated to Newfoundland? Thanks for any help that you can provide.

Dorset / Re: Crew lists for the "Olive Branch" out of Poole

Thanks for the info. The reference I have seems to indicate that the "Olive Branch" sailed out of Poole, not Teignmouth, but I'm starting to realize that this may have been a fairly common name for West Country vessels engaged in the Newfoundland trade. I think my "Olive Branch" would have been owned by the Slade family, although I can easily imagine ancestors of mine ending up on a vessel that was intentionally bottomed!

The Teignmouth origin of your reference is interesting because one of the leads I'm currently pursuing is that my Poole family ancestors came from south Devon -- from Chudleigh to Churston Ferrers before coming to the Trinity Bay area of Newfoundland sometime in the early 19th century.

Thanks again for your help. The fact that you were able to find the date when the vessel and some or all of its crew met their demise should make it fairly easy to trace.

Thanks for providing the link. I actually read Harvey's book a few years back but it was good to see it again.

That is a coincidence. The Slades together with the Lesters and the Garlands were the key players in the settlement of the Trinity Bay area of Newfoundland, where my ancestors come from. I'm hoping that that connection will eventually help me uncover my English roots. Thanks for the Poole Museum tip.
