Perthshire / Re: Can you look up Fowlis Wester MIs?
« on: Thursday 31 August 17 16:17 BST (UK)  »
Resurrecting this old thread as I believe I am related through the Marshall family.

I am a descendent of John Marshall and Jannet Gorrie (b. 1748 d. Between 1841-1851) who were married at Perth in 1777. My understanding is that they had the following children:

John Marshall
b. 1778 Perth

William Marshall
b. 1781 Perth.
m. Amelia Murray.
d. 1857 Methven.

James Marshall
b. Abt 1787 Methven.
m. Mary Melville.
d. 1869 New Scone.

James Marshall and Mary Melville were my 5x Great Grandparents.

Jannet Gorrie lived to a very old age as she was listed on the 1841 census living alongside her son William and his wife Amelia at Methven in Perthshire. She was over 90 years old at the time.

I'd be keen to get in touch with anyone related to these families.

United States of America / John Shepard Aitcheson of Connecticut/Massachusetts.
« on: Friday 18 August 17 11:54 BST (UK)  »
I am looking to get in touch with any descendents of John Shepard Aitcheson, who was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1837. His parents were Samuel Aitcheson and Grace McCubbin who were from Stranraer, Scotland.

He was a soldier with the 27th Massachusetts Volunteers during the Civil War. He married Mina Brigham in Chicopee, Mass. in 1860. He died in New York in 1872.

He had at least two children, Thomas Brigham Aitcheson (1865-1939) and Grace Bamford Aitcheson (1870-1933).

I am a descendent of John S Aitcheson's Uncle, Alexander. Our family line stayed in Scotland and the name eventually became Hutcheson.

Ross & Cromarty / Aulay MacAulay of Lochbroom or Lochcarron.
« on: Monday 19 June 17 19:31 BST (UK)  »
I am looking to find out more information about my ancestor, Aulay MacAulay who I think was from Lochbroom in Ross.

He was the husband of Christy Sinclair, who according to the 1841 census was born about 1791 in the county of Ross. In 1841 she lived in Janetown, Lochcarron. She probably died between 1841 and 1851.

Aulay had at least two children that I know of:

Annabella MacAulay
Born: about 1811 at Lochcarron or Lochbroom.
Married: 1st Graham MacPherson (died 1831-1837) 2nd Donald McLean (born 1811)
Died: 1889 at Janetown, Lochcarron.
Census: 1841, 51, 61, 81 living at Lochcarron.

Alexander MacAulay
Born: about 1815 at Lochcarron or Lochbroom. Probably 26/04/1814 at Inverlael, Lochbroom.
Married: Matilda McLean (born 1815)
Died: Unknown.
Census: 1851 living at Evanton. 1861 living at Fodderty.

According to Annabella MacAulay's 1889 death record her father Aulay was an Innkeeper. I don't have any further information about him.

I know it's a bit of a long shot but I was hoping that someone may be able to provide further information about Aulay, particularly in light of his job as an innkeeper and his distinctive name.

Lanarkshire / Re: Macdonald grave somewhere in Glasgow
« on: Monday 16 January 17 16:29 GMT (UK)  »
Actually on second reading, it was Glasgow City Archives at the Mitchell Library who provided me with the grave details. The search cost me £10. It was Bereavement Services who helped me find the exact location.

I'll PM you with the details.

I contacted Glasgow City Council and they provided me with some very helpful information regarding the grave sites of my ancestors in Riddrie Cemetery. I was able to find the exact location of my Great-Grandparents.

The department was the Bereavement Services Department which is under Land and Environmental Services.

My ancestor was also in the 26th Regiment of Foot around that time.

This history of the regiment might be helpful for you:

Yes got his service record already thanks, and some pension records.

Sadly no mention of extended family in those records.

I can't seem any immediate family connection to anyone of that name... so I'm at a bit of a loss.
