Armed Forces / Re: WHICH ARMY UNIFORM
« on: Wednesday 15 June 05 19:31 BST (UK)  »
I put the photo through photoshop to try and pick some more of the detail out, especially on the shoulder. I inverted the image and what appears to be a number 17 is on the shoulder which would indicate that this man could have been in the British 17th Regiment which became the Leicestershire regiment in 1881. But then above that is what appears to be the badge of a Fusilier regiment, so he could also have belonged to a battalion of a Fusilier regiment. Suppose he could also be a Royal Engineer who also wore the grenade emblem on their epaulets. Hmmm.

Armed Forces / Re: Battle of Waterloo

I'm not sure if I'm on the right board or not.  I am looking for information on Thomas Holding born Dumbarton,Scotland in 1787.  He was in Woolwich, Kent when his son John was born.  I would really like to know which regiment he would have been in, a Scots one I should think.  Also which battles, the Napoleonic wars were on - the battle of Waterloo was 1815, and I think he served in that, and also served in America.

There was another son William born about 1816 in Cheshire.  Thomas was given a Chelsea pension, but as an 'out' pensioner, never actually lived in the hospital.  Any information would be super, as if I can find what regiment he was in, I can go about finding his army records as he was on this pension.  He must have been posted at some time in Cheshire, and then in Woolwich.

Many thanks
Su

He could have been in Woolwich for two reasons...

1) He was in the Royal Artillery.

2) He was in another regiment and was being transported abroad by going through the docks at Woolwich. Or was perhaps billeted in the area.

If he served in America then it is most likely he fought in the War of 1812 between Britain and the United States. This is a good website http://www.warof1812.ca/charts/regts_na.htm that gives details of the various regiments that served in the Americas at that time.

Hope this helps...

Do you have the mariage cert of Tom and Mary?

If so what is his father name and occupation?

If not that may be your next purchase to go a bit further back.

Wendy

I haven't no, but as I have the name of church and date of the wedding I should be able to get hold of it no problems... thanks for all your help! :)

That is absolutely amazing work, thank you very much!!! ;D Never knew I had Geordie ancestory as well. It kind of makes sense though as Tom Tingle went on to join the Northumberland Fusiliers at the outbreak of world war one.

Hi

Sorry, should have made that clearer.

KNOX John, Esther, Mary J, Ada and Hannah resident in Armley in 1891.

KNOX John, Esther, Robert, Ada, Hannah and Jessie resident in Armley in 1901 (Mary J not there).

Ahhhhh very interesting! I think you may be right then! Fantastic! Jessie really does ring a bell, someone my Grandmother used to mention, and it's her line so... it must be.

Thankyou very much!

Hi

Transcribed as KNOT in 1881.

RG11/4895  Folio 78  Page 6
23 Bath Street, Stockton

If you want the full transcription, let me know.

1891 and 1901 resident in Armley, Yorkshire.

Regards

Helen K

Thankyou, but I don't think that's her as she was married in 1897, and was then living in Durham at the time of the 1901 census, with husband Tommy Tingle and son William Alfred Tingle. Interestingly though she was married in ARMLEY and did live there before and after 1901?

Scotland / Hugh McMillan - Please Help.
« on: Wednesday 15 June 05 15:26 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to found out more information about my Great Great Grandfather Hugh McMillan. The only piece of paper I have that mentions him, is his son's wedding certificate... which is dated 30/10/1918 and shows his son John McMillan (aged 26) who was born in 1892 and an Iron Moulder, marrying Annie Storr, in Leeds, England. Hugh appears on the certificate as deceased. I have been told by various family members that Hugh and John were both born in Scotland, possibly Renfrew, wether this is true and when they came down to England... I do not know?

Can anybody help?
