Have you had a look at The History of the Clan Gregor? You can find it online and at Ancestry, and in print from various sources including Walmart, of all places!

I came across it by accident and printed out quite a few pertinent pages and followed my line with the help of a set of coloured pens. It's not easy to track. But eventually (and it was many many generations of "eventually") I found myself in the Scottish royal family, and from there I found a ton of kings and nobility. Some of them are quite horrific. The thing about royalty is not that they are special, but that they are documented. The vast majority of our ancestors come and go without any notice.

Thanks Peter, how very interesting! I'll have a closer look at the sources shortly. I'm not currently working on my tree, taking a little break because in a huge rush to get my major project finished before Christmas I'm a little burned out  But family history really is an obsession and I'll be back to it soon.
