I was downloading the forms so my cousin could order her father's service records from the MOD when I spotted this record. If this is her father than the service number may speed her application. I understand that it can take a few months.
Thank you for pointing me towards FindmyPast but I only have a subscription for Ancestry.

World War Two / Look up please - for Christopher James Taylor

C J Taylor: Service no. 2068137: Rank Sapper: Record Year 1946: Unit Royal Engineers

I believe that it may be my Uncle Jim. That is Christopher James Taylor born 3rd Oct 1920 in Hendon, Sunderland. His home address would be recorded as Dalton Avenue, Seaham, County Durham. I should be very grateful if someone could check that it is him and give me the details.

Many thanks in advance for any help. Best wishes, Yvonne

Hi Colin,
Please note we are cousins, we share the same grandfather Joseph Stansfield b1875. This newspaper article is about him. Your father Joseph Stansfield b1901 and my mother are brother and sister. The aunt who gave me the cutting is also a sister of your father.
I think the newspaper article in the Manchester Guardian dated 8th Mar 1956 about your father can be found on "The British Newspaper Archive" website.
Best wishes, Yvonne

Hi CBS,
The person I was investigating was my grandfather Joseph Stansfield b1875. His son also named Joseph b1901 therefore is my uncle. Best wishes, Yvonne

Thank you Paul and Simon for this wonderful information. You're very lucky Simon to know where you're great uncle served. Being born in 1888 my great uncle could have gone to India as early as 1908 and possibly left as late as mid 1915. It's fascinating to have a list of some of the places where he may have been stationed. Although a battalion consists of 1,000 men I'm sure our uncles must have known each other. As Paul and Ady suggest I suspect my uncle returned to England expecting to be sent to France.
His operation was to remove bladder stones. Probably not an easy operation in 1915.
I've had another search on Ancestry for more information on his medal entitlement but both his Medal Card and the Medal Roll only list the British War Medal.
Thanks again for you're help. Best wishes, Yvonne

Occupation Interests / Re: Merchant seamens records 1918-1941
« on: Thursday 14 February 19 17:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Hugh,
Just to let you know I requested the Crew Agreements that you suggested and The National Archives have sent them for the CHRISTIAN HOLM and the F.J. WOLFE. From the CHRISTIAN HOLM I've learnt that Uncle Albert's previous ship was the GEO. W. McKNIGHT she is an oil tanker transporting crude oil and fuel oil from the refineries in Aruba near Trinidad. So that fills in one gap in his career. The F.J. WOLFE listed his previous ship as "the same" so he was on her from 2 Oct 1939 to 19 Jun 1940. There was no CA for the trip starting Southampton 2 Oct 1939 and returning to Southampton 9 Nov 1939 so I don't know which ship he was on before than.
I believe that he joined the Merchant Navy in the second half of 1938 and we've found him as a passenger returning to Liverpool on the RMS Antonia on 25 Jun 1939 from Montreal. I assume that he's left an oil tanker in Montreal.
Do you think it's possible to find which oil tankers docked in Montreal during the first half of June 1939 and so make an educated guess at which ship Uncle Albert left or do you think this is too much to hope for?
Any further ideas would be appreciated. Thanks for all your help, Yvonne
