Thanks all - glad that it's mostly working better.

The warning may well come now and again, but hopefully less often.

Cheers,
Trystan

I've given it a little more of a tweak. Is that working now?

Trystan

Technical Help / Re: Fake RootsChat blocks content
« on: Monday 04 March 24 20:12 GMT (UK)  »
As many of you know, it can be a struggle to keep the infrastructure of this site running. It has over twenty years of posts and images that have to be stored, backed-up, and the servers themselves are owned and paid for by ourselves. RootsChat is free to use,  but not free to run.

To keep the site going, we show ads. This alert is shown to people who for some reason or another don't allow ads to be shown. It's a small way for us to attempt to recover lost revenue. To stop seeing that alert, just enable ads to be shown on RootsChat.

Logged in users are not shown ads anyhow, so once you're in you won't see them. Happy days.

Well, you are very welcome. We did make RootsChat pay its way in the end - but thank you, that was very kind of you.

We hope you get lots of help, and learn something interesting along the way.

Wow.
Thank you everybody. I can't add much to Sarah's words.

This time twenty years ago, we were deliberating whether to 'launch' RootsChat, as we weren't sure if it was ready. We'd spent months posting useful links to resources, divided the forum into what we hoped were useful categories. The 'back end' of the server was ready. We really didn't know what to expect.

Once we went live, the love flooded in.

You wonderful people started posting in your droves, and equally wonderful members of the RootsChat family replied. Soon, we found the number of postings hard to manage, and some of our friends volunteered their valuable time to become moderators - for whom we are so very grateful.

We've had RootsChat Meets and had so much fun meeting some of you.

We've also had some of our friends on here sadly passing away, and thankfully had the time to pay our respects with some of them.

There have been technical challenges(*) that seemed huge at times, but thankfully we seem to have been blessed along the way.

The most important thing though is to thank all of you. Yes, all of you. You are RootsChat.

Thank you.
Trystan

(*) One of the technical challenges: At one point, the 'traffic' (busyness) of the site meant that we had to use server hardware that cost us four times the cost of our mortgage. That was a scary time, but we insisted that it would always be free.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Security issues?
« on: Tuesday 24 January 23 20:34 GMT (UK)  »
Could you let us know the exact wording of the error message that you are getting, and also the exact name of the files (including the extension eg/ .pdf .doc etc) that you are trying to attach?

Also, if you are able to, can you tell us what the file size of the files are too, please?

Thanks,
Trystan
