Really like the way you've put the image on there - let's hope lots of people follow your lead!

It really looks like GLAK to me, or perhaps HAK ?

Anyhow, found lots of interesting links on handwriting and I've been going off in all directions on the internet so far, but here's a good site (there are many more, but not with many examples):

English Handwriting 1500-1700 - an online course
http://www.english.cam.ac.uk/ceres/ehoc/

and:
University of Leicester - Palaeography
A very very interesting site - hover your mouse over the images, and a little window will pop up with explanations:

Anglesey / Re:Long shot query,

You may also want to put it on the Caernarvon board too - Bangor is on the Anglesey board because the nearest hospital for a birth for a person on the East of the Isle of Anglesey would have been Bangor, which was on the mainland in Caernarvonshire.  :)

Wales / Re:Welsh BMD - No South Wales BMD

You're right - there doesn't seem to be a South Wales BMD on the net, only a North Wales one. (If somebody knows of one then please ost a message!)

You can always try www.freeBMD.org.uk

Cambridgeshire / Re:Cow Fen location?
« on: Friday 02 January 04 17:32 GMT (UK)  »
Brian,

I'm not from down there but a search on Google suggests that "Cow Fen" is in Swavesey.

On Google: (I put quotes around the search so I didn't find lots of cow refererences!)  ;)
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=%22cow+fen%22&hl=en&lr=lang_en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&start=0&sa=N

Then a search for Swavesey brings up lots of useful sites:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=swavesey&btnG=Google+Search&meta=cr%3DcountryUK%7CcountryGB

One of those sites which particularly caught my attention was on the Swavesey Roll of Honour for the Great War by Phil Curme:
http://www.curme.co.uk/

The map of Swavesey can be found here:
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=536353&y=268603&z=3&sv=536353,268603&st=4&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf&dn=883
If you zoom in on the map you can see a "Cow Fen Road" coming off Market Street (to the North East)

The Swavesey Meridian Website:
http://www.swaveseymeridian.co.uk/

Presumably somebody nearer to there can tell you a lot more about it.

Regards,
Trystan  :)

To change your password, go to the "profile" button on the menu (which appears after you have logged on).

Also while you are there you can choose your family crest, or one that you are researching (or an image of one that is on the internet). On the same page, if you list the surnames you are researching in your "signature" then people can find these names when they carry out a search.

Have fun!
