« on: Monday 06 April 09 22:57 BST (UK)  »
I am coming to UK from Australia in 7 weeks time and will be spending 5 nights in Newcastle. I was born ib Byker but moved to London when I was very young so don't remember much about it. Can anyone point me to the best places to visit for help with my family history. My Northumberland surnames are Matfin, Jobling, White, Snowball, Fraser, Watson, and Hall. My ancesters occupations were Shipwrights, Keelmen, and Coalminers. I would really appreciate any advice, thanks, Jabawak

US Completed Requests / Re: Fay Hoevy Purdy New York State
« on: Sunday 28 September 08 07:58 BST (UK)  »
Thahkyou both for your replies, I am trying to help a friend with his Family History. Fay Hoevy Purdy was his great grandfather, and he was born in USA and went to South Africa. What we need to do is find out if the Fay H Purdy in the census has the middle name Hoevy. It seems to be an unusual middle name. What documents would have middle names in full instead of just initials? and how can I search online for his birth certificate? The only way I can get into Ancestry is a day at the National Library in Canberra and that can't happen til after the school holidays that have just started. I have Grandma duties. Jabawak

US Completed Requests / Fay Hoevy Purdy New York State
« on: Sunday 28 September 08 05:54 BST (UK)  »
Would someone be able to find me information on Fay Hoevy Purdy born around 1860 in New York State. How would I be able to find his birth? What information is online?  I have seen the 1880 census but cannot be sure it is the right person as they only give the middle initial. I don't have access to Ancestry and would be very grateful for any help, thanks Jabawak

The Lighter Side / Re: Anyone with Irish roots any time frame

Hello all, my Irish ancester was my grt grt grandfather John Donegan born c1810 in Ireland. The first real evidence I have is his marriage in Bethnal Green on 6th April 1837. Why didn't they wait a couple of months til civil registration came in, at least I would have known his fathers name. On all the census info I have he just lists his birthplace as Ireland. My father always said they came from Limerick but that may not have been so. I would really love to know more about him. Jabawak

Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / Re: Oxford Newspaoers

Thankyou Dj for your reply, I am already in touch with Judee, in fact she visited me last month. I am still not convinced that Sophia Tasker that died in Headington workhouse was my Sophia Eaton/Tasker/Gardner. As I said before the lady who wrote the letter was the daughter of my great aunt. In the letter she says her mother remembered Sophia staying with them as a child. My great aunt was born in 1874 and the Sophia Tasker in the workhouse died in Dec 1871, so it doesn't add up. Maybe we'll never know best wishes Jabawak

Thankyou for your reply bjo. If the police station at Whitechapel opened in 1847 do you know where policemen would have been stationed in 1844? I am not even certain that he was with the Metropolitan police. All I know is this, in 1837 he is a seargent in the Police on the christening record of my grt grandfather living in Orange Street Bethnal Green. On 1841 census he is listed as policeman living in Catherine Street, St George East. In 1844 he is listed as Inspecter of Police living at 28 Lemon Street Whitechapel on the christening record of son Edward. By 1851 he is living at 59 Old Street Road and he is listed as a Barristers clerk. He is nowhere to be found on 1861. By 1869 on marriage cert of my grt grandfather his occupation is Warder Millbank prison. I have checked the records they have online for Met police but he isn't there. These only cover enlistments up to 1830. I live in Australia so can't go to Kew to search the rest. Well I will just keep trying eventually the brick wall will crumble  Jabawak

Is there an expert on Whitechapel out there? My great great grandfather was living at 28 Lemon Street when his son was christened at St George in the East in 1844. I believe it is also known as Leman street. His occupation was Inspector of Police. I have googled and found that there is a firm of solicitors at that address now. What I would really like to know is if this is likely to be the same building and if so what its history is. I hope some one can help me please, Jabawak
