Hi Sue

Sussed it out just after my first message to Mary - thank you for your help though.

Mary is the sister of Hugh Brooks and we are arranging to swap photos etc and put members of the larger family in touch

Thanks once again for all your help

Cheers

Hi Mary

I also live just outside Glasgow - don't know how to arrange to contact you as you aren't encouraged to give out personal details on the forum - perhaps the moderator could help as I assume that's how your daughter got the subject re-opened.  Would love to be in touch.  Have just worked out how to do it and sent you a personal message through Rootschat - please look for it

Cheers

Hi Mary

If we're talking about the same Hugh Brooks, he was married to my father's sister.  I have been researching the family tree for some years and would be delighted to help you with this.

I also have more information on the details of Hugh's death

Regards

Anna

Hi all

Just to update you all - I spent a day at the National Archives in late November last year and found William's record in the original muster books of his regiment.  It gives details of his death - and his wife's second husband is also shown as a member of the same regiment.

I took photos of the relevant pages and enjoyed my day at the Archives.  I would recommend it to anybody who has the chance to visit.

Thanks to all who responded to my first request, both on the forum and by personal message.

Cheers

US Lookup Requests / Re: Rachel McAuslan in US 1930
« on: Friday 02 September 11 14:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

Thank you all very much for your help I'm a bit further forward in trying to trace the family.

James appears to have married Helen Coulter at Beverley Presbyterian Church, officiated by the pastor of the church, Rev Lynn P Armstrong.   The article says that James & Helen would make their home in Bay Ridge.

Onwards and upwards as they say.

I'll come back and let you know if I find anything else.

Once again - Thank you  :) :)

US Lookup Requests / Rachel McAuslan in US 1930
« on: Friday 02 September 11 12:39 BST (UK)  »
Trying to trace information on my Great Grand Aunt, Rachel McAuslan (born Rachel Mills in Glasgow in 1867).

Last record found was the 1930 Census:

1930 - Census - Address shown as 471 Bergen Street, Kings. Lived with children, James (26) William (40) & Letitia (33).  Shown as Widow. Age shown as 62.

James appear to have died in Connecticut in 1993 but I have no information on his family.

William came back to Glasgow in 1930.

Letitia also came back to Glasgow but went back to the US being naturalised in 1943 and she died in Brooklyn in 1962.

Any help in finding out what happened to Rachel would be appreciated - or hints on how to check it out.

Thanks

Anna :)

Thanks once again, I had noticed that the article was for 2 years after William's widow remarried - so presumably was for someone else with the same surname.

I have held on to the information and notice that 2 W Kirklands died in NSW in 1844 (one in Sydney and the other in Albury) - so presumably one of them would be William as his widow's second marriage on IGI is in mid 1844 in Sydney.  She married James Laurie on 6 Aug 1844 in Sydney according to IGI and the Ancestry record shows the location as Liverpool Plains, Tamworth, NSW.  Her daughter Jane Anne Kirkland married in Scotland in 1864 and died in 1877.  So far, I haven't been able to find any details of her return to the UK.

The 80th Foot was all over the world but in the 1840s was engaged in convict transportation to Australia, according to various historical sites.  Details as below.

1835   Liverpool. Dets.
1835-36   Chatham
1836-37   Sydney, N.S.W. Convict escort duty to Australia

1837-41   Windsor, N.S.W. Dets. including Norfolk Island
1840-44   Det. in New Zealand
1841-45   Parramatta, N.S.W. Dets.
1845   Agra

Once again, thanks for all your help and I hope this information helps someone else

Cheers

Anna  ;D
