Im flabbergasted. Thank you both for all this amazing input. It is 5:36pm Thursday here in Melbourne and I am going to sit down after dinner and map out all the information you have come up with. I intend to the meet with my uncle and father to further refine our family tree. I have also been offered help from the local history society in the area where my Purves family lived from the mid 1800s to the 1930s although I'm not sure how much info they have.

The name "Liddle" pops up in the family line of James the elder here in Australia. Might I be correct in thinking it is more a Scottish name than English?

I may not be on line for the next week but rest assured your input is being put to good use and I will be back on in the very near future. Please feel free to leave comments.

Many thanks,

Thanks gnu,

So I guess my next move would be to obtain, if possible, a death record for Liddle Purves and/or his wife to see if there is a Peter listed amongst their offspring. I know civil death records show offspring, would parish records show the same?

Well its 9pm here and I have to be up at 4am so I'm off to bed. You have all given me so much to think about and your help has been unbelievable. I will probably be on again tomorrow evening my time.

Re Peters death certificate, his son James is the informant and Peters parents are listed as "unkown"

Good night from "not so sunny" Melbourne Australia.

Unmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Not sure about this - have you any other substantiating evidence that this was Peter's son:

Quote
James (son of Peter) arrives in Melbourne to join his father 1852 aboard the Thomas Lawry left Aryshire August 1852 (inward shipping records).

Just wondering why he sailed from Ayrshire when we have him Newcastle and (possibly) Berwickshire .

Just found an immigration record ~

James Purves, aged  37,  arrived  26 August 1852 aboard The Ayrshire  Departed london.

I think your info may have been a little out  :-\

gnu,

I'll re check that info with the relative who supplied it to me.

Have also just had a phone call from my uncle which throws more light on, or a spanner in the works, not sure which.

James Purves (alleged brother of Peter) death certificate shows parents as Liddle Purves (profession Engineer) and Mary Scott with his (James) birth place as Berwick on Tweed Scotland.

I can access a copy of Peters death certificate from my father.

Hi Mike

What evidence do you have of Peter going to Tasmania in 1835?

gnu

Hi gnu,

Only that his wife died in 1835 during child birth, his alleged brother James was already out here, and this death certificate shows "years in colony" works back to 1835.

Thank you all for you interest and response.
I thought I should just clear up what I know as far as dates etc are concerned.

Firstly the idea that Peter and James are brothers is supported only by family lore and circumstantial evidence hence my reason for wanting to trace parents. James was the original settler here of a family line that went on to be big owners of land/horses, started a legal practice, had amongst its line a QC and and MP....of course I am descendant from Peter...the line without money :)

The dates and history as I know it are as below (hope this isnt too long winded)

James Purves (occupation, architect/engineer) arrived Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) prior to 1835 to build/supervise stone bridges, then moved to Melbourne in 1837 ("Land Lime Leisure by Charles Hollinshed et al 1982, pub Shire of Flinders).

Peter Purves (stone mason) arrived Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) 1835 to help his (alleged) brother James with bridges. Peter moved to Melbourne 1842 (intra coastal shipping records).

Peters wife Barbara died in child birth, child James b 29 Sept 1835 and sent to live with aunt (surname Russell?) in Berwick.

James (son of Peter) arrives in Melbourne to join his father 1852 aboard the Thomas Lawry left Aryshire August 1852 (inward shipping records).

A strange coincidence re the Cairns family in the Census record.
When Peter Purves settled in Melbourne, another well know family in the area was a Cairns family. In fact I had a great aunt who married one of the Cairns men.

Thank you all for you surprisingly speedy and generous response.

I am particularly obliged to Sue for the marriage information. I did know when/where he was married but was  not aware that parent information wasn't listed. Obviously the witnesses where relatives of the bride.

Barbara died in child birth in the same year as their marriage, and I believe the baby (James) was sent to live with an aunt in Berwick. Peter then (allegedly) joined his brother, also James, in Tasmania where James was involved in building stone bridges. Peter came to Melbourne in 1842 and his son James joined him out here in 1852 at the age of 17. There is a Purves Rd here named for the family farm that was sold up during the depression.

Once again, thank you all for you interest.

My ggg grandfather was married in 1835 in Newcastle Upon Tyne and died in Australia in 1860. His death certificate shows parents as "Unkown". I believe he was born in Berwick Upon Tweed in 1802 but have yet to be able to prove this.

My online searches has so far not shown a birth or baptism for Peter Purves (Purvis).
Any suggestions on how to trace his birth/baptism would be much appreciated.
